How Virtual Humans Learn Emotion and Social Intelligence

At USC ICT’s Virtual Humans lab, we learn how researchers build tools and algorithms that teach AI the complexities of social and emotional cues. We run through a few AI demos that demonstrate nuanced social interaction, which will be important for future systems like autonomous cars.

  1. That the system really doesn’t work that great. 🙂 This being put forward to treat PTSS etc. is, in my opinion, a bit of a sales-talk. It’ll be yeaaars before we can really have a meaningful treatment out of this.

  2. The system learns from a sample of participants, and I suspect that these scores are based on that sample. Strikes me that the system has worked with people who are very similar to each other but not similar to Norm. Norm is a happy guy who does not need to smile to show it.

Anyone who has traveled/lived around and outside their home country will know that mannerisms and basic face-to-face interactions (e.g., eye contact during a conversation) can vary. It is very tricky for humans to interpret and respond appropriately, computers, even more so.

Anyone remembers ELIZA? Developed in 1964 (50+ years ago). Shows up in the game set for emacs from time to time. The “I am not a therapist” therapist reminds me of ELIZA and that makes me sad.
