Hands-On with Skydio R1 Autonomous Drone!

We go hands-on with the Skydio R1, a camera-equipped drone that not only flies autonomously, but can actually track you and avoid almost any obstacle in its flight path. And from our first test, it actually works–we couldn’t get it to crash. Skydio CEO and co-founder Adam Bry walks us through the computer vision technology that makes the R1 work, and we share our impressions from the impressive test flight.

  1. Seriously impressive! Expensive, but if the feature works reallllly well, it might actually be worth it. One thing though, what if I take it out, run for a bit and it by mistake starts tracking another runner in a certain condition… I guess you can just ask it to go home (being the location of the smartphone)?

  2. On the podcast you made comments about playing hide-and-seek with it. That would have been interesting: dodge under low branches, and then hide in/creep through bushes it can’t enter to try to evade it. Especially in Lead mode. When (not if) Adam gets one, can you do a longer test of this? I would also love to see Adam take this to a con and fly it overhead as he onewheels through a crowd, because tracking in a crowd is another interesting ability I’d like to see.

  3. This is so cool. It seems the low light video quality was not great. Unclear if that is just an artifact of the video stream.

Taking this on a picturesque hike would be awesome.
