Hands-On with Oculus Rift “Crescent Bay” Prototype Virtual Reality Headset

Norm goes to Oculus Connect to get a hands-on demo of the new “Crescent Bay” feature prototype of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. We interview Nate Mitchell and Palmer Luckey of Oculus VR to talk about what’s new in the headset, reveal some technical specifications, and then walk through the entire demo experience–with 1080p video from the private demo room!

  1. Man, Palmer Luckey is fucking boss in that interview. I’m getting so stoked for this now, seeing what progress they’re making this quickly.

  2. Norm interviewing Oculus is among my favorite series on this site! Great job as always Norm.

This does seem like quite the scoop for you guys, did other people get to shoot video in the demo room? I hope you didn’t get the handler fired. Haha.

  3. Palmer looks like a chipper 15 year old who just won a shopping spree at his local Toys R Us! 😅

Great job on those interview(s), ! I can’t wait to see what else that you filmed while you were down in LA..

  4. A few thoughts:

I wonder if it would be prohibitive to use 2 cellphone screens, in tandem, one for each eye. Coupling that with some mirror system if necessary. Of course it could get too complicated and surely there would be more points for failure (syncing for instance). But maybe?

Why don’t they put the cable over the top of your head, going through the top strap and the back plastic thingie (without blocking the 3d capture markers, of course)? Wouldn’t it be much more comfortable?

If they added some sort of HUD showing the limits of the space you’re confined (that demo room in ‘s case) would that hinder the sense of presence in any way? It would help you to not bump your head/hands/body so it wouldn’t be as disruptive, I think.

  5. This video lacks the traditional “Will looking shocked wearing the Oculus” thumbnail!

    *a few seconds later*

*slaps forehead*, DUUUUUUH, it’s because he isn’t there!

  6. Great video Norm! I guess Nate is the nice guy at Oculus and Palmer is the big no nonsense CEO 🙂 Are you and Will ever going to try VorpX?

Can’t wait to own an Oculus!

  7. It’s pretty clear that nvidia and Oculus have been working together in some capacity, is it possible that this prototype is running the stacked (cascaded) displays that nvidia did a white paper on? Especially with that picture of the prototypes mid-assembly having two ribbon connectors.

  8. Can’t wait to hear what Norm has to say about this on the podcast. One can only assume that Jeremy will be present 😛

  9. I swear, the Oculus team give the best interviews.

They know their product well and even when they can’t disclose specifics they somehow manage to give really good answers to direct questions that leave you feeling excited, not frustrated.

“You know what, please don’t tell me what display you are using, we’ll find out eventually, but for now just make me excited about trying it, and quick… strap that thing to my head so I can have a look”

  10. That’s weird, why are they ducking the resolution question? Won’t the devs using the dev kit want to know?

edit: oh, it’s not an official dev kit

  11. I am impressed to the standing experience, even though its not something they at all endorse. Watching norm take a step back from stuff to be able to bring stuff into view or avoid it seemed well maintained. He also didn’t seem to experience any latency issues that caused him to get disoriented and fall on his ass. Which in and of itself is impressive.

I must say as the oculus vr solution grows up, I am getting more and more interested in it. I am definitely at that point of buying a ticket so i can get on for the ride. Even if its just due to curiosity.

If norm gets a Carmack interview man that would awesome.

  12. It would be amazing if you guys could get an interview with John Carmack on the tech behind the screens and device. This may not be possible till after the commercial release, but it would be very fascinating conversation with the tech knowledge you guys have.

  13. Put a Talking Heads song on top of Norm’s VR moves, done. Got major 80s flashbacks from watching this 😀

    Great video!

  14. Neat stuff. A Carmack interview would be boss, but agreed with the other guy that it would go completely over most peoples heads.

  15. “The Oculus is a sitting experience product.” Makes press stand during demo.

What I don’t get is why even do a standing demo if you’re so set against people using it that way?

Here’s this new product, but you must never use it this way. Okay time for a demo using it the way we just told you not to…

It was a Chekhov’s gun style practical joke.

Short answer, no. That technology was based on stacking LCD panels and does not work with AMOLED. They may have added some kind of diffuser to the screen to merge the RGB subpixels into single multicolored pixels like people have been doing with their DK1 and DK2 by adding scotch tape to their screens. Also like Panasonic does with their projectors like the one I’m using right now. In fact if I look closely at the pixels on my projector screen it looks sort of like the “linen” effect people describe from the Crescent Bay prototype.
