Show and Tell: Nixie Tube Clock

For this week’s Show and Tell, Norm shares a recent purchase: a relatively inexpensive Nixie tube clock that makes for a beautiful desk display. This clock makes use of Russian IN-14 cold cathode tubes paired with a simple control board with RGB LEDs for color accents. The only thing not included is a cheap 12V power supply you can easily get online.

  1. I’ve got two of these (IN-8-2 and IN-12 models that I built myself) as well as the awesome nixie watch. Don’t know what it is about Nixie’s but I just love them… Something you don’t see a lot in the images and video’s online is that there is a faint blue glow around the outside of the orange glow. its very special indeed.

  2. Nixie clocks are like the Maker’s lightsaber, you have to make one in the course of your training.

I like your In-8-2 clock (my first one was a In-8-2, I like the “real” 5s instead of the upside down 2s). did you use mahogany for the case too?

  3. Norm, put it in a case, these things uses a lot of voltage!

I love those things and i love that watch benhewitson, there is a cool story online from Woz who likes “changing the time zone” while on airplanes.

  4. Speaking of digging up nixies always puts me in mind of this story Giz posted awhile ago. Gods, to find something like this…

    Abandoned NASA Awesomeness

The biggest problem I see once you find that is what to do with it? Keep it as is or use it to build tons of awesome stuff?

  5. That is so cool! For me, who remembers the 1970s, this was a blast from the past to see them again. As a kid, going to the Ontario Science Centre here in Toronto these were on ALL of the displays, as they were state of the art. I feel like I’m 10 again…..

  6. I believe its cherry wood, but could be mistaken. When sanded it smells a lot like Western Red Cedar (common in Australia). I wanted to use Jarrah, but that will be the next project. I’m going to do a french polish on this one to see how it comes out. Fits will with my retro lamps and blue cat….

  7. hey mate, i bought the various parts as kits many many years ago (probably 6+). I’ve had a look through my emails and the name of the seller was Petes Kits or PV Electronics out of the UK. They dissipated many years ago but in researching a response to you i noticed that Petes Kits was back! I’ve linked the website below as well as the instructions for both kits if you are interested (my google drive). My cat broke my clock and i had to get parts from eastern europe. This was amazing as they came in the original packaging with corrugated cardboard protection and soviet stickers. really cool.
