Adam Savage’s Airplane Cockpit Prop for MythBusters!

Adam shares one of the many props he loved building for MythBusters–a speed build of an airplane cockpit that exemplifies the joy of a quick and dirty build. It comes from the episode where Adam and Jamie tested the different plane boarding strategies to find the most efficient boarding process, which you can watch here. Special appearance from Adam’s dog Maggie!

  1. Display option: You remember the vertical bus at Meow Wolf? You could mount the yoke on the ceiling with a sky photo behind it.

  2. So awesome…. One of the things I try to keep at the core of my design work is that every object should be an experience. It’s not just a physical object. Experiential design and story is what you really should be getting out of an object (besides its intended purpose should that be something else). What I absolutely love about this is that it completely is an experience. It’s like you said about it making you feel like you’re 12-year-old Adam. That’s powerful stuff! So cool. Also, I have to say, the other thing I think is great is how elaborate and authentic your pilot’s uniform is compared with your cockpit while you’re flying the plane. It’s perfect. haha

Some kind of ceiling or wall mount could be cool, because it would be a place of honor, BUT you wouldn’t be able to enjoy taking it for a flight now and then. Perhaps some kind of pulley system, rails, etc….? Something you could use to pull it down now and then that’s nice and simple?
