2001: A Space Odyssey 1/6th Scale Figures

Discovery astronauts Dave Bowman and Frank Poole finally get sixth scale interpretations in these detailed figures from Executive Replicas. We chat with the company’s co-founder to learn about the making of these space suits and figures, and the plans to make a full-size spacesuit replica for sale in the future.

  1. Woohooo!

I did this 3D rendering many years ago. 2001 is the only movie I would consider “nerding” out over. I don’t do replicas or costumes, but 3D is an endless supply of free materials and tools. 🙂

  2. I was blown away to learn that the space suits from the film were made from leather. Wow. That would not have occurred to me. I would have assumed some sort of (dare I say) “space age” plastic material.

Bet those weren’t cheap to produce.

  3. That’s pretty cool!

Definitely one of my cult movies, I don’t know how many times I saw it, including twice on the big screen.

  4. Winston kid of misspoke, my Original Discovery suit which is shown in the video was leather it is the prototype. When I made it I did not know what the original screen used suits were made from .A few years ago I visited the LA museum which had the Kubrick exhibit and the Clavius Moon suit on display. That suit was a knit backed vinyl painted silver. It was apparent that it had been painted yellow and blue at some point so I surmise that this is the material used on all the 2001 space suits.

When we go into production with the full size suits they will be in vinyl.

When Adam ordered his Clavius suit some years ago he supplied the silver material which was a 4 way stretch silver metallic fabric .I think the production silver Clavius Moon suits will also be vinyl its just a much stronger material.

We will start selling Helmets first with the full suits a bit later depending on the preproduction time line.

Im not sure about the pod I will ask Winston about the time frame on that piece.

Im very excited to be a part of this project as you can tell Im a huge fan of Kubricks films with 2001 at the top of the list.
