Adam Checks Out the Apollo 11 Command Module!
We all know Adam is obsessed with Apollo 11, and while visiting the National Air and Space Museum’s Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar, he had a special opportunity to view the Columbia Apollo 11 command module up close. Objects conservator Lisa Young takes Adam through some of the work her team is doing on this historic artifact, differentiates between the pre-flight and post-flight marks on the exterior, and lets him peek inside, revealing the three-person crew’s tiny living quarters for most of the mission!
Note: At the time of filming, there was a mask mandate in place at Smithsonian.

I was eleven years old when I watched every moment of the Apollo 11 mission on the color TV in our house. (Probably got nearly as much radiation as the astronauts from the old CRT.) I was in my twenties when I worked as a museum aide at the National Air and Space Museum where I saw the Apollo 11 CM every day. Watching this video brings back so many memories I’m surprised they aren’t blocking my view of the screen.
I wanted to mention that Mike Collins left an inscription in the Lower Equipment Bay of Columbia, right beside the sextant and telescope he used to align the navigation platform. As far as I know, it’s still there, and you can see it if you get right up against the plexiglass and use your hands to cut down on reflections. He wrote, “Spacecraft 107, alias Apollo 11, alias ‘Columbia.’ The Best Ship to Come Down the Line. God Bless Her. Michael Collins, CMP [Command Module Pilot]. His book, “Carrying the Fire,” is one of the best, personal accounts of the Gemini and Apollo days around.
