Inside Adam Savage’s Cave: Modelmaking Inspiration from Weta Workshop!

One of the many reasons we love Weta Workshop is the support and encouragement the artists there receive to create their own worlds and explore them in concept art, sculpture, and models. Adam and Norm share the work of master modelmaker David Tremont, who not only is part of the team that makes Weta’s detailed collectibles, but documents that work in a series of terrific books: Build Stuff and Let Slip the Androids of War!

  1. The “RAY GUN” is breath taking; I had to watch the video twice just to push the video a number of times to look at it’s details. I love it when you (Norm) and Adam geek-out over models, props, and books. It’s so fun to watch. Norm, you mentioned that TESTED would be giving the collections of books away… That would be so cool and helpful. Thanks again for the video and wishing all a good new year to come.

  2. Incredible. I’ve been such a fan of Weta since I first heard they were going to make LOTR – it inspired me to make my own movies in college- with not the same craftsmanship lol. Those books, what a find! I didn’t know such a thing existed. I’m a community College Art Teacher Outside of Portland Oregon (if you ever want to visit and talk about the importance of process and drawing…) and my wife teaches High School Art – needless to say we would love to show our students something like those tomes of realized imagination.

    – oh, I always talk about this to my students, but every tool is a hammer was such such such an amazing inspiration btw. And believe it or not has really helped me be a better father to my two kids. I watch Tested with them before school (getting them ready to go now hah!) Both kids have their hands into stuff constantly. Ten year old is always collecting bits and pieces of crap, string tied all around the room. I got to explain to him what kit bashing is just now- Adams book really let me remember that magic of making at that age. (I wish he had Adams attention for process and lists!!!)

    – hey thanks for putting your shows out their they are really really positive and inspiring.

    Ok off to school!

  3. This is such a great video, always been a fan of Weta and specifically Greg Broadmore and the Dr. Grordbort universe. Inspired me to make my own Ray Guns nad even start a Ray gun subreddit, r/RayGunRepository for anyone who’s interested!

  4. I used to know someone who had at least two Dr Grordbort ray guns. They were quite amazing to see up close.

  5. Oh man!! What great information. This is the type of stuff that keeps me inspired and makes me want to pass it along to my students. These books look unbelievable.

They are now on my list to get for the building library. Thanks as usual for sharing!!

  6. WOW WOW WOW…you make me gush for Weta and their worlds. Thanks, guys always get a kick as you do out of these amazing items.

  7. I just finished the Barad Dur book and what a ride involved in making that collectible. Thanks for touting it Adam & Norm. Thanks Seattle Maddog for the link. Fun reading.
