Totally Unauthorized Commentary: The Thing (1982)

Watch along with Adam, Norm, and Sean as we revisit John Carpenter’s The Thing! We gush over the practical special effects of the film, peak Kurt Russell, and Rob Bottin’s terrifying creatures.

  1. Love the commentary and the movie choices. Curious if there is a “self imposed restriction” on some of the comments?

I would guess everyone who is huge fan of this movie or ANY of Carpenter’s movies would listen to the AMAZING audio commentary. For The Thing it has Kurt Russell AND John Carpenter talking TOGETHER and also the FX guy. AMAZING! BUY THAT DVD if you don’t have it. I think it was a special edition version. The audio commentary of Russel and Carpenter is so funny with amazing stories. They do commentary on the special edition DVD for “Big Trouble…” along with some other cast I think. That one is also priceless.

Anyway, self imposed comment restrictions? On nearly every major scene of The Thing, I remember so many stories from the DVD commentary from Carpenter, Russel, the FX guy and others. It would be almost impossible for me to NOT repeat those stories in a similar situation. Just curious if you guys restrained from repeating that stuff so as not to “step on toes” so to speak.

  2. Thanks for making these commentaries. The Thing is available on Netflix and It was very enjoyable to watch this brilliant movie together with you.

  3. Come on guys please fix the audio on these commentaries please. I had to blast the volume just to hear Adam and Norm while Charles was very loud.

  4. the totally unauthorized commentaries feature is one of the primary reasons i am a premium member to tested. i would love to see a “Aliens” commentary with Simone (again). just remember to get the sound right when recording!

  5. Loved this movie when I first saw it in the theater. I found a version on YouTube ( Your video is only 1:46 but the one I watched was 2:02 (and starts several minutes in with the helicopter chasing the dog), so maybe you have an “edited for TV” version. I had to resync several times. (You had just a bit of the movie on the wall behind you. Projector spill?)

You can improve your audio with some post sound work, normalize and use a compressor.

Consider doing a commentary of Carpenters first film, Dark Star. It was done on a shoestring budget so the effects are really primitive but fun to look at. I loved the elevator scene. The DVD I have of it has two versions. One is about one hour, the other is 1:22. Be sure the use the shorter version. Here’s a version on YouTube that is 1:57 so that is an even longer version (
