Adam Savage Paints and Weathers the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Model Kit!

Adam catches up on the Eaglemoss Ghostbusters Ecto-1 model kit with the intricate engine assembly. In this condensed build update, he guides us through his painting and weathering process, using a mix of oil washes and rub-n-buff wax highlights to make this scale model look like a beat-up and grimy piece of 50s machinery! (Full assembly and painting video here for Tested members!)

  1. Maybe a second camera could be mounted and focused close-up on the main work area. Then either a supplemental video could be posted showing the work-in-progress in better detail, or be added in as a PIP window. I know that often the work gets lifted out of that area, but those portions could easily be scrubbed past by the viewer. Just an idea.

  2. It’s a good idea, but in this case, there are no cameras. Adam is just filming everything on his iPhone at the moment, since we’re in quarantine; we are trying to keep things simple for him.

  3. Really grateful for these videos during this time! I know Adam has mentioned in the past that having some quiet during build vids is really quite nice, and just personally, wouldn’t mind quiet during these too! Just don’t want Adam feeling pressured to talk during the whole build! hah

  4. Love watching you work on weathering effects. Your videos always give me inspiration to go make models. Had a question for you: I’m working on my first scratch build Star Wars ship from polystyrene, and it’s at a 1/270th scale. And at that scale (and the 1/72 or 1/144 scales I often use), I’m struggling to find greeblies that look in scale from other model kits. Tank parts just seem too big most of the time. Any suggestions on what sort of models or what scale of model kits might offer good details for greeblies at these scales?

  5. I’m about three weeks behind you. Trying to make mine different but when I paint what I think looks right, it comes out so similar to yours. Not my intention but if it turned out similar to yours, I would be totally amazed and proud. I did put the red stripe on the air filter to bring it back to the movie. I figured some things were replaced over time. So they would be less dirty and rusted. Thanks for showing us yours. What an inspiration.

  6. Suggestion, Adam– get yourself a small piece of felt. Or “craft” felt. Just like a watchmaker’s table, working on it helps control dropped tiny parts.
