Model Behavior: Patina and Polish

We can’t get enough of Bill’s Skyrim-inspired prop builds, and this week we assemble a cold-cast dagger kit from the Punished Props archive. Bill shows us how you can get a metallic finish by polishing cold cast parts, and then add real patina weathering without any paint!

  1. So… Patina fluids (or fast oxidizers). Some time last year I was chatting with the owner of a local crafts store and they came up in the conversation. She said they had been pretty popular, but their stockist had stopped supplying them, because according to them – the stockist – importers don’t carry them anymore, and it’s supposedly due to current EU regulations that puts restrictions on all sorts of neat chemicals. Now, this is hearsay, of course, but there could be some truth to it, since the aforementioned regulations have severely restricted workplace chemicals (such as forcing the automotive industry towards water-based paints) or making household detergents next to useless by banning potent solvents and replacing them with solvents derived from natural oils and such. I’d be intrigued to know if other EU residents have encountered a similar issue, or if patina fluids are freely available where you live. I’d also like hear about homebrew solutions for oxidizing copper, brass, iron and such, if you got any, other than leaving a piece of metal outside for a few years.

  2. no one going to mention marrowind keening, sunder and wraithguard were the three tools of Kagrenac

  3. Appreciate it. Harrison’s posts are splendid reading, talk about thorough! Hydrogen peroxide, though, is again on the list of consumer-restricted chemicals. I believe currently, unless you have a business and obtain some paperwork, around 10% is the max you can get in Finland. I will still probably try it out, as I’ve also been meaning to see if it works for Retr0bright – http://www.retr0bright.com/ – got some old Commodore hardware as well as near-vintage Lego I’d like to restore.

  4. Very nice and informative video! Learn something new every time! Thanks Bill and Tested. Keep on doing your thing!
