“a bro who sews” I love that 😀
Question: “How do you get young girls involved in science and technology ?”
Answer “Get out of their way.”
This made me applaud and smile so much I can’t even begin to describe it….
Adam…You are a great representative of the human race…Thank you.
I don’t want to sound like an asshole but who exactly is holding them back? If a girl goes to school, get’s educated in science or technology, they will get hired just like anybody else.
I’ve watched just about every talk Adam has given over the years, and I’m always impressed by his ability to take the exact same audience questions and spin them into new and entertaining answers.
“What was your favourite myth?”
“What was your favourite episode?”
“What’s your favourite tool?”
“What’s your favourite build?”
“What was it like working with Jamie?”
I love that he cares enough about his fans that he doesn’t just go into autopilot and repeat the same responses every time.
Really enjoyed this one, can’t wait for the next one!
I’m not trying to miss represent what Adam said but, don’t think he was talking about women in STEM having difficulty getting hired. As understand it in general women with degrees in STEM are able to get jobs as easily men (unfortunately there are some exceptions even to this). The real problem is getting more women interested in pursuing degrees and careers in STEM. I got into Manufacturing Engineering because no told me I couldn’t do this. Engineering in particular is a difficult and sometimes discouraging field to study on its own. I can’t imagine how much more difficult it is for young women who have people who tell them they can’t do it (especially there parents or teachers) because of there gender. To answer your question of “who’s holding them back?” Its people who think that men are some how better suited to STEM or more interested in it than women. Sorry for the small novel I hope I answered your question. Cheers!
I found it interesting that Adam sometimes doesn’t want to go into his shop. I feel like that every now and again (it is usually cause it needs cleaning).
Great talk Adam. Thanks
and it doesn’t even need to be actual, concrete persons in a young woman’s life who try prescribing things – just the automatic assumption that this here is a girl subject, while that over there is a boy subject can put one thing on her radar as a natural choice, while making it an effort to even think of the other as something for her do, or be interested in without being kinda weird, or wrong, or not normal.
Yeah everyone faces discouragement from someone whether intentional or unintentional. The best thing to do is to try and encourage those around us and find people. Also seek out people like Adam who encourage us to make and pursue the things we’re interested in.
So I’m working on my Adam Savage cosplay…I need that jacket. I love it so much. Does anyone know where I could find it or what its called?
a big problem is women staying in STEM fields when, well, read this: https://monicacatherine.com/2017/04/05/dear-microsoft-no/
basically more women would be in STEM if we, as Adam says, got out of their way and made the environment much less toxic for them.
Good stuff, as always. Thanks for posting!
