Making a Skyrim-Inspired Foam Sword!
Bill Doran of Punished Props joins the Tested team to share his expertise in foam fabrication and prop building! In our first project, Bill designs a foam sword that we can cut in our shop laser cutter. The simple project lets us dive into the basics of shaping foam with contact cement and rotary tools.

double stick taping the foam material to some card stock/chipboard sheets will help with remove the warping of the foam. it really helps on leather too
Really glad to see Bill has joined tested. I miss Frank but Bill is just as interesting and entertaining. Looking forward to see him more in the future..
Ahh, I was looking for a project to do for my first stab at foam smithing at the maker space. This will do!
That’s a really great idea!
Just a heads up, the vector files are available for free on our website! http://punishedprops.com/free-blueprint-files/
Leather strips can be gotten nearly for free at yard sales and such bu buying old belts and hats
Wait, what? Frank left? I will have to rage quit my premium sub then!!! (just kidding, kinda)
So glad to have Bill here, but I think this hippy uber contrast and shallow DOF (with camera drifts and laggy focus) finally went too far. They simply are not a very terrific idea for a making video, not to mention one that deals with black foam.
Is barge also the glue of choice for sticking other materials (a 3d-printed part) to foam? Or is there something better suited for that?
Man I gotta get a laser cutter. I can’t afford one yet but all the projects you all have been doing has made me reach out to a local maker space to rent time on one. Thanks for the inspiration as always. And yeah Bill + Tested = Awesome. Great talent curation as always Norm.
Glad to see Bill on Tested.
It’s great to have Bill on Tested! I’m looking forward to seeing what else gets made!
Great vid, and a nice set of blueprints. No laser cutter here, but gonna have a go at hand cutting these 🙂
Good ol super glue is what you want for things like 3d prints
Ordering foam right now!
