Premium: Testing Airbag Detonation in Norm’s Backyard

Go behind-the-scenes of our most recent video and watch us set up the high-speed camera test of an airbag being detonated on command. We had no idea what could happen while we were recording this, so you can see that we’re a little bit nervous. Especially Joey.

  1. I’m a big fan of multi-camera setups utilizing different frame rates and perspectives.

Video at fullscreen, 1080 (Safari 7.0.2 (9537.74.9)) was stuttering at playback as the video downloaded/buffered fully. Once it was done that, flawless playback.

  2. I second what said. You need another camera pointed at the neighbors to get their reaction. Now THAT is the premium content we deserve!

And I’ll 3rd that – motion carried! Sorry fellas – you’ll need to do it again with the “neighbor-cam” in play this time. 🙂

Serioudly though – these are fantastic videos. I remember touring an airbag manufacturer in the early 90s and seeing a similar high speed video as part of the presentation. They described the airbag’s deployment as a “controlled explosion” and that immediately became my favorite oxymoron.

    Thanks guys!

  4. Awesome video. Nice launch-pad back-yard. I like that you even have the Mythbusters set-dressing with the square of caution-tape :p

  5. Did you guys have to alert any local authorities that you were doing this? I would suspect that some neighbors might call someone to tell them they heard a bang.

  6. I really wish all of my experiences with airbag deployment were from that far away, but they probably saved my life or at least limited my injuries a few times.

  7. I guess you probably just twisted the wires because you didn’t want to have anything dangling around there that could potentially become a projectile and that’s fine. But in general, for experiments like this the wago lever-nut connectors are really usefull. Push the levers up, put the cables in, push the lever down and done, the cables are connected. You can find them by just searching for “Wago” on amazon.com, for example.
