Premium: Gearing Up for the First Day of CES 2014

On the first day of CES 2014, Will and Norm wake up at the break of dawn and pack their bags in preparation for press conference day. Here’s what they’ll be taking to the show floor, and what you can expect from Tested at CES this year.

  1. Nice vid guys, dunno if it’s just me or not but I’ve found the new video player to be a lot slower. I’ve been getting stuttering and stuff for every video posted despite not watching it in HD. My connection isn’t that fast but seems to be fine for 1080p content on YouTube.

  2. Also . Have you guys ever used a personal recorder instead of taking notebooks? I know a few people who prefer to travel light and who just record statements as opposed to writing or typing stuff down and they say it’s so much lighter and quicker to get around show floors using this method.

  3. my phone works as a voice recorder as needed. But I like writing notes down because transcription is time consuming, and I can’t annotate on the fly.

  4. Very cool. As a veteran of 20 years of tech booth duty, it was very interesting to see what participants carry. The number one “must have” for booth duty is great shoes. Three days of standing on concrete will cripple you for life. I thought the emergency lunch was a good idea.

  5. I believe uses the Blackrapid RS-4 which attaches to his tripod mount on the bottom of his camera, he probably just doesn’t have it attached.

  6. Just FYI, I’ve yet to be able to watch one of the premium videos without pausing as long if not longer than the video itself to play without really bad stutter.

  7. ipad is purely for reading books and comics before bed and on the flight. all work gets done on the laptop, including when on the show floor. we’re not crazy like Wired Gadgetlab over here and trying to cover CES with just smartphones! (love those guys)

  8. – I also get the stuttering issue unless a pause it and let it buffer for a while… And although I don’t have the fastest connection (thanks Australia) there should be no issue, as like you mention 1080p videos on youtube work fine.

  9. Same here, I get a 2-second pause between each syllable, pretty unwatchable, sorry :/

EDIT: Oh yeah, unless I pause & go make a cup of tea. Bit like the early days of YouTube over dialup

  10. Love it. Intrigued to know how you use your Field Notes (I think so far i’ve only seen Will use it to plan his daughter’s bedroom? Heh!). I use mine at work as a daily log of things I need to remember to do but can’t (or can’t be bothered to) do that instant (using a page per working day), then at the end of the week I can see all the things I still haven’t done and freak out a bit. Yay.

  11. I’m getting choppy video as well… And it seems only on this new player. When a watch videos on the Youtube player the video is fine…

  12. Shrdlu To everyone who is having trouble with the stutter/lag, I recommend using a video downloader like the DownloadHelper addon for Firefox. You can download the whole video to your computer while you continue about your other internet tasks. When it finishes downloading, you can watch it lag-free using a media player on your computer, and delete the video once it’s done. I’ve been using this as a workaround for all of the premium content until they come up with a better player.

  13. Yeah it’s what I’ve been doing too but we shouldn’t have to, they should have a player that just works.
