Episode 108 – Electric Fascism – 02/16/2012

On this week’s episode, Will mispronounces stuff, Gary loves fortified yoghurt, and Norm referees an intervention. All that, plus OS X Mountain Lion, Windows on ARM, and another episode of fake outtakes.

  1. MAGZine just replied to your comment:

The appeal to the non-tech crowd is something I did overlook, but I think that the argument about faster and faster processors is moot, because we’ll just keep opening up more and more software avenues to use those CPU cycles with new & interesting things, such as gaming and augmented reality apps.

The iPhone did shake up the cellphone industry for sure, but the ipad I don’t think will – tablets have been under development and are just coming out now/new future-ish that arn’t desktop oriented. The Archos is a decent multimedia tablet, and others like the JooJoo tablet, as well as all of the tablet devices I’ve seen on Engadget running Android make me think that the iPad isn’t really going to strike up anything incredibly interesting, because for the most part, other than some UI changes, the framework for ‘iPad-esque’ devices is already here, and has been here for at least half a year.

I suppose only time will tell on what affect the iPad will have on the mobile computing market.

  2. I just hit the part where Will was talking about the Tested Minecraft Server and Garry Whittaburg. For those of you who are curious, I wanted to warn you that it doesn’t exist on the live map anymore because we had a complete reset when Mincecraft went 1.0. For what it’s worth though, the OG map is archived in a really big download which you can find in the server’s forum thread.

  3. Any idea what Gary was referring to before being silenced abruptly during the OS X talk?

They touched on it more later but I’m pretty sure it was an attempt to respond to those like myself who have previously said that the podcast gives a substantially disproportionate amount of time to Apple discussions and how discussions of other subjects always seem to get directed back to talking (and often gushing) about Apple stuff. I’m sorry but it does. Will can call that trolling if he wants and he can say that people like me are just hearing what we want to hear but I’m responding to what they’re saying on the show, not words I’m making up in my head. If they want to be heavily Apple centric, there’s nothing wrong with that at all. I just wish they’d own that viewpoint rather than continue to deny doing what can be clearly heard every week.

As one of the people who want to hear about all tech news and not how everything directly relates to Apple in some way, that’s just what I think. I think Apple news is important and should be discussed but not everything needs to be compared to it or casually dismissed simply because the hosts are big Apple fans. I’m obviously in the minority with this opinion and that’s fine. I don’t expect them to change everything based on the minority viewpoint. If this is the formula that works best, good on them. I’ll just attempt to find another tech podcast. I won’t harp on this point anymore because Will obviously doesn’t agree with it.

  4. I have this vision of Gary that he is an American that was accidentally born in the UK. That when he was a kid he would go to the west coast and think, “Somewhere out there, there is a land with shitty junk food I can’t even imagine where you can make fun of countries that you can’t find on a map.”

  5. http://www.bodum.com/se/en-us/shop/prodlist/49/ Here you have some nice teapots. That is if you don’t want to use teabags :). I love a nice filter with roobios tea because those teas often have very small particles. Also, the notion of temperature being REALLY IMPORTANT is not important to me. That is because tea is a personal thing, so my advice is to test it yourself! Also, that way it becomes a LOT more fun, because then you actually can taste the difference yourself.

For me, Just below boiling for my green tea is perfect and I have it in for about 3-4 mins. For rooibos I have it in a really long time BUT I actually have no idea of what is the “correct” way.

Also, I most often use tea ball-filters. Even though I have an electric pot that does everything “perfectly”. WHERE is the magic in that? :):)

  6. FWIW, when we were talking about the Xbox 360 GPU, we were saying that saying “it’s going to be 6x as powerful as the Xbox 360 GPU” is a gross oversimplification, then explained why that is. We didn’t say the topic was ridiculous, we said the things people were repeating were ridiculous.

Oh I agree people repeating oversimplification is ridiculous. But those people also were doing it to get page views and not worried about page content.

That was really the only example I could think of at the time to illustrate my views

  7. From another conversation about this. Pretty sure this is the last time I’m going to talk about this:

It’s an opinion show where we discuss the news and events that are interesting to us. We don’t claim to be the publication of record. OPINION is the important word.

In the year 2012, Apple is one of a very small number of vendors doing interesting things with personal computers. Their share of the personal computer market continues to increase as a result. That’s why we talk about them, and that’s why we’ll continue to talk about them.

If you want to hear from people who think its 1995 still, that RISC vs CISC is a relevant topic, and Steve Jobs is the devil, there are plenty of podcasts out there for you. That’s the beauty of the internet. In the meantime, we’ll keep talking about the relevant tech we’re interested in without concern for iconoclastic wankery.

As I’ve said, my opinion is clearly in the minority and I don’t expect you to change for me. If you feel the current formula works for you, that’s fine and it’s on me to find another show if I don’t like it. However, I think it’s important to provide feedback whether positive or negative because as I’ve said before, how will you guys ever know how to evolve the site if you don’t hear all perspectives? I’m a two year pre-subscribed gold member because I really believe in the way Whiskey Media approaches editorial. It’s just unfortunate to see it being so lopsided towards one particular topic in various aspects of the site.

I think your comment about me and the others with my view just wanting to hear from people who still think it’s 1995 is out of line. Frankly, that’s how one would respond to a troll and I’ve been trying to offer constructive criticism. If you disagree with me, that’s perfectly fine but implying that my comments are rooted in some chip on my shoulder about Apple (I’m buying an iPad 3 and have advised my girlfriend to get a 4S as her next phone, yep I’m totally just a hater) or that I fault you for not just hating Steve Jobs is ad hominem pure and simple. I’ve said nothing to warrant such a personal attack response and I’m more than a bit surprised to see that. Your tag line on the front page says “Bitch at Will if you don’t like something on Tested.” If you don’t actually want to hear anything but positive feedback, why do you solicit it? Regardless, I’ve stated my stance and you’ve stated yours so now we clearly know where each other stands. All the best, I will not bother you with this argument anymore.

  8. Really appreciate Gary’s tea talk. I drink tea like I would drink water. It isn’t a fancy thing. I find American fascination with bottled water just as perplexing.

  9. I drink Twinings Earl Grey every day and have for 15 years, and I’m not a posh tot by anyway means, Gary you’ve become distanced from British culture, PG tips is nassssty!

  10. Being Australian I kind of feel we straddle the Coffee/tea divide. Historically UK/Irish population, with a large post WW2 influx of southern European migrants, there is an appreciation for both beverages.

On the subject of tea, I agree with Garry regarding the pot of tepid water for tea, I’ve had that in non-tea drinking countries and its pretty rank, you end up with insipid muck. One important tip I can’t emphasise enough, let your infuser/teabag sit in the cup for at least 3 minutes, just because the water has changed colour, doesn’t mean you’ve made tea, the extra time lets all the flavours and tannins get into the water. For those of you who don’t like the caffeine try ‘rooibos’ it’s a South African tea that my wife loves.

  11. With all this hub bub over… time management, I guess, as Tested’s resident Microsoft fanboy I’d like to say that this episode of This is Only a Test gets my stamp of approval. Not that anyone cares.

  12. , you have just inspired me to get this bad boy. I could never figure these out as a kid, but can’t wait to build it now as an adult.
