The appeal to the non-tech crowd is something I did overlook, but I think that the argument about faster and faster processors is moot, because we’ll just keep opening up more and more software avenues to use those CPU cycles with new & interesting things, such as gaming and augmented reality apps.

The iPhone did shake up the cellphone industry for sure, but the ipad I don’t think will – tablets have been under development and are just coming out now/new future-ish that arn’t desktop oriented. The Archos is a decent multimedia tablet, and others like the JooJoo tablet, as well as all of the tablet devices I’ve seen on Engadget running Android make me think that the iPad isn’t really going to strike up anything incredibly interesting, because for the most part, other than some UI changes, the framework for ‘iPad-esque’ devices is already here, and has been here for at least half a year.

I suppose only time will tell on what affect the iPad will have on the mobile computing market.

  2. In regards to AT&T: Down here in South Florida, AT&T is pretty great. The amount of times I’ve dropped a call down here are countable on one hand and as for Uverse, I used to have it and loved it (until it got way to expensive for me to keep using). That considered, I would still give them a giant middle finger for the throttling. They haven’t given me the throttle text yet, but I’m basically just waiting for the day they do.

  3. The ONLY way that animal cracker scene would work is if it were Norm playing with them on Will’s naked, ginger belly.

‘I don’t wanna close my eyes.. I don’t wanna fall asleep, ’cause I miss you baby, and I don’t wanna miss a thing’

  4. You can multitask airplaying video and anything else if you don’t use mirroring. If you do it the old way (pre iOS5) and stream media (limited app support – youtube, ipod, built in video player, pictures, etc) you can hit the home button and it’ll still stream.

And you can airplay any video or music through iTunes (as long as it’s in the right format) on a Mac or Windows PC. Does not do mirroring on Computer though.

  5. The ribbon is collapsible, isn’t it? So why the fuck do you guys keep bitching about something you don’t need to have if you don’t want it? You all sound like idiots, if you ask me, with all the hate for a feature that in the past has been frankly fantastic. I’m not saying I’ll use it, but I don’t mind it, because I don’t need it to be there if I don’t want it. It reminds me of people who only use the start menu by hitting windows key, typing three letters, and then hitting enter to launch bitching about W8. Not at all thinking about how it’ll actually function (ie keeping important features up front) or how it has worked in the past (totally collapsible.

  6. Also here is some fun trivia open google docs on chrome the open word 2010 with the ribbon interface and see who tales more vertical space on the header, spoiler is not Word.

I actually use Libreoffice because it’s free and has some features I like but have no problem acknowledging that Office is superior to LibreOffice and GoogleDocs. The problem is that superiority is only clear if you do complex documents, spreadsheets or presentations, most people do simple stuff and for collaborating environment Googledocs is a simple free solution.

I have basically the same experience, in SW Florida. The customer service is usually just OK, but the service is the best in my area. Which is to say pretty great.

  8. More time spent discussing Apple rumours than the ton of Windows 8 information released and even most of that conversation was making unrelated Apple comparisons. Too bad. 🙁

  9. Holy shit, I’m an hour in to this episode and here’s the breakdown:

    • 35 minutes of iTV, iPad3 rumors, and iPhone rumors. Some of the time is spent talking about how everyone discusses Apple rumors too much (is the kettle black?)
    • <5 minutes of Chrome news in which they spoke more about safari and twitter than Android Chrome
    • 10 minutes of windows 8 news, which devolved in to more discussion on the iPad rather than the Windows 8 tablets
    • 10 minutes of bashing Windows and Android commercials, interfaces, apps and, of course, talking about how Apple does a better job in each.

I like listening to you guys, but c’mon. There’s more to the tech world than Apple.

  10. More posting in instalments. It is one of those weeks where I can listen to the podcast while I am near a computer, but not all in one sitting. I know Will was half joking, but the assertion that it doesnt get cold here in the UK does not fly this morning: -8°C! (17°F) which is, and pardon my French here, absolutely fucking freezing!

  11. Gary was great on this episode. Fake outtakes made me want to watch Star Wars, for the first time in a long-ass time!

I don’t mind Apple discussion in general, but i dislike it when you guys repeat yourself so much week after week. You tend to spend too much time talking about things that had been discussed already when there is really nothing new to add, eg. Apple TV and iPad 3 retina display.

  12. Up until June 2010 the company i worked in was using an MS-DOS based till system in ALL its stores. We ran three tills off one gateway 2000 PC. once a week we had to backup all the transactions and customer details onto nearly 20 floppy disks.

  13. The “Best Space Battle Ever Put On Film” was the Enterprise vs. Reliant battle in Wrath of Khan. Though I guess comparing Star Wars and Star Trek space battles is an apples & oranges thing.
