Episode 48 – Parole Set for 2/10 – 1/12/2011

The power trio shuts the door on CES before talking about the Verizon iPhone, Google dropping H.264 from Chrome, Intel and Nvidia burying the hatchet, and the rise of the Mac App Store. All that, plus fake outtakes and reader Q&A on this week’s episode.

  1. Monkeyman04 just replied to your comment:

” I live in the good ole US of A. Up in Oregon too where there is no sales tax.   : ) “

For now. I’ve heard that there might be a bill going in to be voted on in November that could add a sales tax.

    Anyways, I’m from Washington(not DC).

  2. Taurine, a.ka tauric acid is a naturally occuring sulfonic acid found in bile, and in I believe the lower intestinal tissue of many animals and that includes humans – not just bulls. It’s named “Taurine” because it was first discovered in ox bile in the 1800s.

The taurine found in foods, pet foods, and energy drinks is synthesized. It’s not actually taken from bulls or any other animals. You are not drinking bull bile in that Red Bull. The articifical taurine is made from an oxide and an acid, or sodium, or something I don’t know the specifics of. Some sort of chemical reaction beyond my understanding of sciences.

  3. CES breakdowncast?  How wonderful is it that Tested busts their ass in Vegas all week and still get a podcast out.  Must listen!

  4. Excellent science nerd talk.

Gravity is relatively weak but has a long reach, and it can warp SpaceTime.

Surprised nobody mentioned Quasars as a scary peril of the universe. Brightest objects in the known universe, they’re galaxy-sized fountains spewing out immense amounts of radiation. A Quasar jet sweeping over the Milky Way would be bad news.

  5. Rather than mix in audio questions live, you should really reinsert them in post. The levels are completely out of control and the questions are inaudible. If nothing else, try to summarize the question at the beginning of your response so that missing the question doesn’t ruin the answer.

  6. If you guys are still on a space book kick, Mary Roach’s “Packing for Mars” is an excellent look at the human elements of the space program, as is Astronaut Mike Mullane’s “Riding Rockets”, with the latter providing a first-hand perspective on the shuttle program (Mullane being part of one of the first post-Apollo astronaut classes).

Just finished “How to Teach Physics to Your Dog”, and loved it, but the real winner of my week was Mike Brown’s “How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming”, by man behind the discovery of many of the major Kuiper Belt (Quaoar, Sedna, Eris, Haumea, etc) objects that led to the whole Pluto debate in the first place.

You guys should totally get Phil Plait (the author of “Death From the Skies!”, as previously noted) on the show, he’s great.

  7. Yes! Star Wars talk. Next week, Star Trek. Week after that, Star Search.

And as for someone saying your guest on the second live show was like Leigh Alexander, she was NOTHING like her. Leigh Alexander was loud and obnoxious. The very fact we could barely hear your guest at first because she was moving her mic is proof enough.

  8. Let me add to the chorus of voices loving the nerd science talk. You could do a weekly podcast of unqualified nerd discussion and I would love every minute… even with the inaccuracies (oh, and Will, brown dwarfs are not the size of Earth, but generally have masses slightly larger than the largest known gas giants up to the smallest known stars).

And Will, maybe you should contact Andy Bauman on how he handles the audio leveling. His podcasts always seem to have the audio questions at a audible level.

  9. I love the space & science talk.  More of it please.  If tested.com expands or Whiskey does another site this year please do a io9-ish site with the Whiskey style database.

Re Star Wars: I thought Garry’s time travel insane child imagery during the CESpool cast were perfect.  I used to just stare at Star Wars RPG manuals and just dream of what the clone wars were like as a kid.   The best part of 1-3 has to be detective Obi-wan in 2.  I wish they would have turned that into a tv show.  I’d watch that every week for years.  Just the idea that he has all these old connections through out the galaxy that he can lean on is pretty awesome.  The special editions are garbage except for the space scene special effects.

  10. ” Message received on the voice questions guys. We wont do them anymore. We’ll also continue to talk about stuff we know absolutely nothing about too. 🙂 “

GODDAMMIT I just finished installing XCode -> MacPorts -> Lame to compress the question I recorded & mixed in Audacity and was checking for the podcast address.
