Podcast - This Is Only a Test

Episode 25 – Goat Prawn – 8/26/2010

Will, Norm, Ana, and Matt sit down to talk tech on this week’s show. Matt goes hands-on with Windows Phone 7, Will rants about Blu-ray load times, Norm wonders what Apple’s going to show on September 1, and Ana talks about treating life like a RPG. All that, plus our first audio reader question, general silliness, a truly awful joke, and a whole lot more, on this week’s episode of This is Only a Test.

  1. TheBeast just replied to your comment:

I’m yet to see any reports that suggest 256MB is inadequate; although I’m sure if it’s a problem, we’ll know about it over the coming months. You have to remember that iPhone OS is specifically designed to work with this hardware; it’s not as if it’s the same as having 256MB RAM in your laptop.

As for multitasking, typical multi-process style will always be slower/require better hardware, although Backgrounder does work really well on my iPhone 3G. Considering how careful Apple are about maintaining battery life/responsiveness, I wouldn’t be surprised if their multitasking implementation doesn’t work the same way at all; I think we’ll probably just see a built-in way for apps to save/restore their state to/from the storage memory, perhaps with some additional support for allowing apps to run a barebones version in memory for music players, etc.

  2. I am curious about this audio question, but hooray for early podcast!

For some meta fun I’m going to be playing tf2 while listening to this later today.

Edit:  I hope this means Ana is a permanent host on the podcast!  Matt is a cool guest to have also.

  3. Bring Whitta back for a “how’s your new PC” update.

Hopefully, he’s not just sitting on his ass playing WoW. 🙂

  4. Great podcast guys, your best yet. The addition of Ana (make her a regular dammit) and Matt brought a fun dynamic that allows you to play off of each other. Moar please.

  5.    yep, podcast!  There’s also a little email link above the episode player on this page, for your convenience.   Audio Questions Are The Future!

  6. why the heck would you waste your money buying blu-rays/ DVDs when there’s Netflix (with the exception of truly great films that demand a spot on the collection shelf, of course)?

  7. ” Ana should be on every podcast. “

This.  And also Matt is very good on the podcast as well, surprisingly good audio quality too.

Yep, I should have mentioned Matt too – the podcast is much more dynamic with a group.

  9. Microwaving water is fine unless it’s distilled pure water. Cause what causes boiling is the impurities in water, so if the water is impure, you can heat it up and it will boil at 100 degrees celsius. If your water is distilled and very pure, it will actually heat PAST boiling point without boiling. This is where shit gets dangerous, cause when you put your tea bag in, or drop some instant coffee in, that shit will boil AKA explode. If it’s at 150 degrees or whatever, that whole cup will pretty much evaporate right in your face. Which is a fairly common cause of burns. Anyone working at an emergency room will have dealt with this on numerous occasions.

If you are going to boil water in a microwave, be sure to put something in it first. Even if it’s not distilled water, just tap water may not contain enough “crap” to make it boil at the boiling point. Put something like a wooden spoon or something in there to dissipate the energy.

    Science, it’s scary sometimes.
