Episode 290 – Positively Stephensonian – 2/26/2015

This week, Will and Norm are joined by TekThing’s Patrick Norton to discuss this week’s news, including the FCC’s broadband as a utility vote, more Smartfish aftermath, the Gemalto hack, China, why it’s Pebble TIme, and Valve’s not-so-top-secret-anymore VR tech.

  1. I have to agree with about diversifying the look on the Pebbles, and not just by adding different “bands”, when most watch owners only change the bands on their watches when they break. As it was mentioned, the reason most watch collectors have a variety of watches is because the every one of them speaks to them differently and they use them for different occasions. I really think they should be looking at the model used by Fossil brand watches, where they offer a good selection of different packages per year, and then the next year they are gone; making it very hard to bump into another person wearing the same watch.

Also I have to say that, although I already pre-ordered my Pebble time, I really wish the new watch looked more “grown up” and more “classy”. I think it would greatly help to validate the idea of smart watch, and show that it was a place in our lives.

Finally I just want to say that as an owner of a collection of about 15 analog watches, my original pebble has made me wish my entire collection was a little bit “smarter”.

  2. I was a fist day pebble backer and i just love it, but nothing makes strangers cross a crowded room to ask “what is that on your wrist” like my Nixxie… if only it could give me notifications…

  3. Was very close to buying the Asus Zenwatch but the battery turned me off.

This, however, is backed already as I like the red version quite a lot!

  4. Kiki rules! In the late 80s, my friend Craig took out a 2nd mortgage on his mobile home to buy one of the first Video Toasters – we had so much fun with the Kiki wipes! 🙂

  5. The first time I heard the term “Tiger Team” was in regards to the team that NASA assembled to work the problems that the Apollo 13 crew would face as they tried to survive long enough to get back to Earth.

  6. I actually do swap out watch bands on my different mechanical watches, maybe once per month. Some are more waterproof, some are more washable when I’m a sweaty mess in the summer, some are dressier. Not that I’ll be buying multiple bands for an Apple Watch, or an Apple Watch in the first place….

  7. Thanks to Mr. Norton for being on the show. His down-to-earth approach to tech is always appreciated. He would be great as a semi-regular guest or fourth chair as would his partner in crime, Shannon Morse. She would bring a fantastic new dynamic. I am very glad Tested and TekThing are friends.

  8. The Navy worked out the maths for tracking a long time ago, the maths is good. The hard bit is getting accurate inputs from sensors.

  9. Really liked Patrick! Would love to hear him talk about about eighty percent lowers and his thoughts on technology and firearms in a nonpolitical and informative way.

  10. What’s wrong with cheaper laptops? I recently bought a $230 laptop for my dad since he was still using an old Pentium 4 that was overheating constantly and it’s been great so far. Not everyone needs (or can afford) an $800 Apple laptop.

  11. Anyone listen to the audio version of the podcast feel it was lower then normal? I had to crank my stereo in my car to hear them. Great talk though!

  12. I’m actually a little surprised at the nonchalance over the FCC regulation if the net. I’m for net neutrality, but that doesn’t appear to be the limit of FCC’s plans. Standby for taxes and fees, all to be passed on to Joe Consumer. I mean, not to offend, but anyone who thinks the federal government in its current state is capable of effectively regulating anything without messing it up is fairly naïve. I’m just surprised over the lack of concern. Not that there’s really anything we can do about it, one way or another.

  13. Not that that aspect concernes me in any way, being european, but I haven’t read of any proposed taxes. Where do you have that from?

  14. mostly by extrapolation. Just look at any other “utility” the US government “regulates.” Honestly, at this point there are more unknowns than knowns, with the actual rules not yet released by the FCC, but it doesn’t take a genius to predict the path this will take. There was an article on CNET outlining some concerns, but in general one should not be surprised to see this balloon into a power and money grab. From the same people that brought you the NSA snoop-a-thon comes “net regulation” – I mean, what’s not to like? 😜

  15. I felt hurt when Screensavers was cancelled. I lost touch with what those guys were doing… but hearing Norton on Tested all these years later is just awesome.

  16. What was your opinion on the whole fedex/ups refusing to ship that cnc milling thing used to make guns?
