Podcast - This Is Only a Test

Episode 195 – So Long, 2013! – 12/19/2013

How did the year pass so quickly? For potentially the last podcast of 2013, Norm is joined by Wes and Jeremy to talk about robot telemarketers, Google’s robotics ambitions, virtual reality, and China’s historic landing on the Moon. We also discuss products we’re testing, reveal a MAME machine project, and give a little preview of what to expect on Tested in 2014. Plus, predictions!

  1. For stylus pressure sensitivity for iOS, I like the HEX3 JaJa. It’s not Bluetooth and actually operates by sound. It requires adoption from drawing and writing program developers – fortunately there are a healthy number on the iOS side. I would use it more often if I had an iPad, but I’ve only got an iPhone 5 and an ASUS Transformer tablet. As an aside, i would NOT recommend it for Android tablets – there is simply very very poor adoption from developers on that side. It basically just ends up being a plain stylus with no pressure sensitivity on Android – quite disappointing.

  2. “It’s ok, you can admit it, if you bought 1, 2 or 10 things for yourself”

Now… where have I heard that before? 😉

  3. You guys realize that 2013 isn’t over yet, right? A lot can happen in the next 11 days.

True. But this also may be the last podcast of the year. So, Norm’s just playing it safe in that regard..

  4. Just so you know, MDF, is medium density fiberboard. MDF is a very dense, generally high quality material that is made from a combination of hard and soft wood residue, pressed together with wax and resins. It is very flexible, and smooth. It is very heavy, which if you want to move the product, can be an issue. It also needs to be sealed or it can shrink and warp from humidity.

It is *not* particle board. Particle board, OSB (oriented strand board), has its uses, but is generally low to low-medium in quality and would not want to use it for furniture unless you want Ikea-like quality.

The best wood product for a MAME cabinet would be an A-C quality plywood. Plywood gets letter grades, (generally A through D, sometimes AA for really high quality finishes), so an A-C would be a great, paintable surface with a backing that is average. You want the A quality for the outside. Having a nice, finished wood is what you need for painting and finishing is a must. The C quality is to keep the cost down, while not compromising on the stability. You don’t need finish quality on the inside, B grade just raises cost without upping quality enough, and D grade isn’t quite up to snuff.

    Hope the info helps!

  5. got a BMPCC o/ more mirrorless talk aw yeah

the RAW footage would have been helpful when filming inside Jamie’s bus, the windows were massively blown out

  6. As for how the Chinese rover landed on the moon, it used a relatively gentle thrust to decelerate its fall towards the lunar surface and then free fell from approximately eight feet. Between three and four hours later it released the yutu (jade rabbit) rover onto the surface leaving beautiful twin tracks through the lunar surface for the first time in thirty seven years. It was very well executed and a human engineering wonder. You’re absolutely right that it was sadly under covered. If anyone is interested it was probably best casted in the States on universetoday.com and Phil Plait’s bad astronomy blog on slate.com. All the joy and pride in humanity without the political nonsense. It can also be found telecasted on YouTube.

  7. As far as the kid hiding behind his phone in the iPhone commercial, I did something similar a few years ago when I got my 7D. I wanted to play with my camera so I would hang in the background and took what amounts to B-roll of my family’s Christmas, did the best I could recording the opening of gifts and then cut everything together with Windows Movie Maker, tossed whatever christmas music I had under it and the family thought I was the next best thing to Scorsese (exaggerating a bit here). Then I was tasked with documenting my Grandma’s 90th birthday, felt like a huge burden and I’ve released the raw footage to the family because it’s taken too long for me to do anything with it, and I can’t come up with anything I’m happy with.

I don’t think I really wasn’t present in too many moments that christmas because again it was just moments where people had their guard down and I was only doing it when I was a little bored. I do see how a person could become disconnected from the moment though.

  8. I forgot to mention, I have the opposite problem of you. My antenna is broke in my car so I can’t listen to my favorite weekend NPR radio shows.. So use the TuneIn app to listen to my local NPR station.. over the internet… in my car.

  9. Really awesome that you’re building a mame cabinet! I’m actually in the middle of that too. Mine’s a Fix-it Felix cabinet.

  10. As a former employee and husband to a med school graduate, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out it’s Johns Hopkins, not John Hopkins. Johns was a family name. I’ll stop with the dumb error pointingoutness now.

  11. Hah! I was going to point this out too. I don’t even have a connection to the name or university, but it’s a mistake I made for a long time, and I think a lot of people do.
