Episode 170 – Audio-Only Edition – 5/16/2013

This week, Will, Norm, and Wes discuss Google I/O, Hangouts, Maps, Music, paid YouTube channels, the problem with Kepler, the Microsoft/Google brouhaha, and a whole lot more. We didn’t do fake outtakes, but Norm did discuss the fall TV upfronts at length, so it’s pretty much the same thing. Enjoy!

  1. When I heard about ‘Almost Human’, this was the first thing I thought of:

    Also RIP Fringe.

  2. An unlocked HTC One is only $575 http://shopamerica.htc.com/cell-phones/productdetail.htm?prId=41589 and the GS4 is $630 direct from T-Mobile which is what makes me question the pricing of the stock Android GS4. I would have liked it if they went with a lower price but maybe it’s because Samsung wouldn’t allow it? Maybe Samsung wants you to use their custom features so you get so used to them you would only buy their phones in the future so they asked Google not to sell it at a lower cost.

  3. Good show.

    On Nintendo’s eShop:

While I don’t excuse Nintendo’s sub-optimal handling of digital purchases, they do have methods and systems in place for people to reclaim digital licenses from system theft and breakage. Sadly, there are enough horror stories written and said about the successes and failures of the process to not instill much confidence in investing in Nintendo’s eShop on 3DS and Wii U.

It is a shame as there are some cool games available only on the eShop for the 3DS and Wii U. Recently, Nintendo has several promotional sales on the eShop where I picked up a Japanese Role-Playing Game for the 3DS that evokes many tabletop trappings (Crimson Shroud; you can use the touch screen to roll d20s). I have no illusion that I have easy control over my digital purchases on Nintendo’s digital systems; there is additional stress on me to ensure the safety and security of my Nintendo systems. Still, I believe there is enough software of merit only on the eShop to not completely disregard Nintendo’s store and its questionable policies.

  4. No the transit method is not generally applicable. I’m sure you know that the planet needs to cross the star as seen from Earth, which is certainly not the case in the majority of star systems. I do get what you’re saying, missions like Kepler can look at many stars at the same time but you do need specific circumstances.

  5. I use satellite view a lot because my daughter’s softball team plays all over the county in these little towns I’ve never been to, so I have to pull up the sat view to figure out where the fields are.

  6. You mentioned no push-to-talk apps, but my work has been testing and using Zello. Takes slightly longer than the nextels did, but it’s pretty close.
