  1. a properly balanced sword is a very unique thing to hold in your hand – for one, it’s almost always lighter than expected. and then, its balance makes it feel in the hand as if it wants to move in the exact manner it was meant to.

    a friend of mine has a replica of a spada da lato – think the knight’s sword taking a decisive step towards rapiers, but not going all the way quite yet. that blade has a way of resting firmly into your hand, as if it was averse to tilting your wrist down and letting its point drop, and implying to you that it would very much like to be pushed straight forward.

    no wonder people are calling blades ‘alive’.
