No Solo Talk – Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project – 5/31/18

We’re waiting until more people have seen Solo before we do a full Spoilercast review. So this week, we talk about a laser cutting storage boxes, internet mob mentality, and a new Tested project with actress and stunt performer Zoe Bell. Plus, some love for Starchild!

  1. Looking forward to seeing a chainmail one day build from Adam. IT’s my main creative outlet, so always perk up when I see it 🙂

  2. I’m glad you tackled the Elon issue in this forum because seeing this happen last week on twitter was really disheartening. You may have already read it (and it’s quickly becoming outdated) but Jon Ronson’s So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is still essential reading on the subject of the social media pile-on.

  3. Where can I find a link or pictures or something about the laser-cut hinged box? I’m having trouble visualizing it from the audio podcast.

  4. Though it is an issue that Elon had, I think that it’s more of an “Instant Media” issue. Being allowed to do hit and run post/texts/whatever, as allowed more people to think that taking a side while being uninformed is a good thing. While this particular issue has to do with Elon, I think (and this may be just my opinion) it also has to do with the echo chamber effect that social media has created.

The problem created by “Instant Media” is that people can feel like they are part of a movement (regardless if they understand the ideology of the movement or not) with nothing more then posting something that they feel will appease the crowd.

The “Echo Chamber Effect” only makes matters worse by re-enforcing that negative behavior by providing feed back that the negative poster can see as positive. The result is that the poster of the negative comment now feels justified in making their negative statement.

If people just took the time to think about what they are trying to say, rather than just “going with the crowd” a lot of the negativity we see in social media would get curbed. I know not all of it would, it’s the blessing and curse of being a place of free expression. That being said, we should look at it for what it is; a place where global discussions can take place, as well as a place where civil disagreements can be had (key word “CIVIL”).

Social media should never have been a place where mob-rule is the way, and blind leadership is followed. If you’re following a person that has infinite number of followers, and they say the sky is purple that is not justification to lose your mind and just agree. People need to think about what they are doing both from a followers standpoint and from a leaders standpoint. People with a lot of followers do need to be held accountable for what they say, but not anymore or less then their followers that repeat what they say as gospel.

It’s funny though, in making something a person has to use some common sense or they could break what they are doing, or worse, get hurt so in a way me posting all of this is just like talking in an echo chamber. I’d like to think that people who come to Tested all think before they post, and use common sense and common decency when talking with others.

I will say that I agree and disagree with Adam though. I don’t think women are targeted but they do get targeted more then men in the social media realm. I don’t think it has to do with the XX chromosome, but rather with the perceived weakness that some people think women have, these people also attack transgendered, homosexuals, and people with limited physical functionalities too. To quote an episode of the Simpsons, “some elephants like people, are just jerks” (that was from the episode where Bart gets an elephant from the radio contest)

Sorry for the short winded rant, but the topic of being PC and censorship really boggles my mind, and as a topic should be discussed more openly then it is.

Also congratulation Norm on the dad thing. Makes me wonder if “A Bunch of Dads” will be getting a reboot?

  5. If anybody happens to be in the SoCal area, Arclight Cinema and the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood both have Solo costumes on display. I got some nice detailed photos at the Arclight of Qi’ra, Han, and Lando and put them up for everyone to help with making their own. I’m hoping to get to the El Capitan in time to get the other costumes there along with some props like the cards and Lando’s blaster in better view. https://www.flickr.com/photos/154476314/albums

  6. The Responsibility of your words when you have a following, reminds me of the Pheasant scene in the Movie Shogun (1980).

  7. Norm, I really wish you’d share the model building station with the airbrush area you mentioned, even if you haven’t tested it yourself. I’m currently rebuilding my modelling bench, and would love to see the space you’re talking about to see if I can use it.

  8. On the podcast you mention seeing an Instagram ad for an IKEA product (hack?) to create your own workbench with a hood for model painting. My teen’s ear pricked up when he heard it – he desparately wants a hood for his small model workshop. Can you tell me the name of the product? Thanks!
