  1. Nice that the discussion of letterpress is actually about the printing process and not the iOS Game.

I’m a designer and printer, and one of my hobbies is to restore old printing presses and print using both plates and type.

Thermography is actually a cheap way of achieving the feel of embossing, not that of a letterpress impression. They are very different processes, although many “modern” printers mix the terms impression and debossing when talking about the tactile quality customers are after now (the latter being a made-up term, used to all the old-timers’ great annoyance).

Unlike letterpress, embossing uses two dies, a male and a female, to shape the paper, acheiving a higher precision relief. Letterpress impression usually looks softer as printers use photopolymer plates, metal plates (“cuts”) or single pieces of lead type that are being pushed into soft, cotton papers. Papers are often dampened to aid this process, further adding to the soft, puffy look.

Like Norm says, at the end of letterpress’ life as a commercial process, any impression was considered grounds to discard the print, as they were trying to compete with offset lithography. A debate does exist about how much impression was normal in older times. Printing without any visible/tactile impression requires not only skill, but a lot of time, and commercial printing has always been about speed.

San Francisco has one of the last operating type-foundries in the world, M & H Type, which is located in the Presidio. http://www.arionpress.com/mandh/index.htm

Something worth checking out and ? It might not be the place for elaborate etsy-cards printed with polymer on heavy Lettra paper, but they do have some crazy technology that looks like it is straight out of a steampunk comic =)

Edit: About kids wanting weird stuff. When I was like 11 I asked for a briefcase because I really, really wanted James Bond’s briefcase from From Russia With Love. I got one and used it to hold my toy Walther PPK, my passport and a bunch of other stuff… it was awesome. Sadly no hidden gold-coins or knives.

  2. You might want to obscure the piece of paper with Adam’s signature on it.

I had the same thought, but then… he probably signs his autograph for people, so it’s probably not a big deal?

I’ve never seen his autograph? Is it the same as this signature? A lot of celebrity uses a different signature between the autograph and the “legal” one. For obvious security reasons.

  4. Anybody has a link to that “Best headphones for less than 100$” story they are talking about?

I searched Wiredcutter but couldn’t find it (only an article about best blutooth headphones).

  5. You might want to obscure the piece of paper with Adam’s signature on it.

Looks like they have pixelated the video now. Either that or I have one crappy internet connection this morning.

Wow wtf lol…the WHOLE video is pixelated now? hahaha. That’s one way to solve the issue I guess haha.

  7. I’m just pretending that Tested is an old school Sierra adventure game now.

Hey, they do have a SCUMM version of the 4 guys in the header now so it fits with the re-design lol.

  8. Another great Adamcast. Um maybe just me couldnt the lower third be covered with a logo or title card instead of blurring the whole vid?

  9. just for curiosity could we get an idea of the numbers ppl watch the vid vs listen to the podcast?

i’m guessing vid is smaller due to the portability of podcasts, however the ability to play a vid at ur desk in the background while multitasking might be enough to offset. just curious.

  10. A lot of celebrity uses a different signature between the autograph and the “legal” one. For obvious security reasons.

    Fair point.
