Makes me wonder if an off-the-shelf foot pedal for DC motor speed control could be patched in instead.
Can’t helping thinking , that if you wired the neutral to to the other pole of the rocker switch ( as apposed to permanently joining the 2 neutral wires ) that the red & yellow/orange neons in the switch would illuminate

Isn’t there a speed control dial on the back of the saw already that is easily accessible right on the handle? Maybe not enough range?
