Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Hero Prop for TV Show!
Adam’s latest build is a special treat: he’s been tasked with making the hero prop for the new TV show Year of the Rabbit! For this Victorian-era procedural comedy, Adam is making the police truncheon for Matt Berry’s Detective Inspector Rabbit character. It’s also a build that has Adam experimenting with new processes like acid etching!

Great piece! I love the history that gets added as the build progresses.
I would love to know the story behind the cast iron frying pan Adam has hanging next to his metal lathe!

How do you write the “bjudel” windshield glue?
I can’t seem to find it.
Yay, some actual woodworking and machining! It’s been so long
Butyl It is technically an adhesive, but its used for for waterproofing. He’s specifically using “butyl tape” in this instance.
yay, more one day builds. I’ve had to deep dive through the archive to satisfy my itch.
Unfortunately Berry is using a different baton in the trailer for the tv show.
Electroetching is much, much faster and easier to control. Even if you’re not in a hurry, ferric chloride sitting there for a long time can loosen the adhesive on your masking material and seep under without you realizing it, screwing up your etch. It’s a big problem if you have fine detail in your design.
I also just plain don’t like having bottles of ferric chloride sitting around. It’s pretty nasty.
not the same in IMDB trailer:
I think Adam did better!
Adam’s definitely looks better, but I fear it might be a little too chunky for what they were going for? Most truncheons I’ve seen are thinner, and that translates to easier more agile moves.
went out and watched this show after seeing this video. its fantastically funny, and i never would have even heard of it if it wasnt for this vid. i was a bit dissapointed to see that hes not using it this club most of the time…… BUT adams is used in either episode 2 or 3, its got a nice closeup shot of the rabbit as he thunks it down on a table before and after beating someone with it.
I was figuring you’d put a magnet on the back of the button thick enough to get into almost-contact with the (presumably steel) nut/threaded rod assembly. Or would that not have been strong enough?
possibly, but that opens up the possibility of it flying off when someone swings the thing… and then having to hunt it down or find a replacement before the next take.
OMG!
I soooo badly must go buy a lathe now!
Damn YOU Adam!
)
Also…. Fantastic CAMERA WORK!!!
(and I should know)
Adam! For the love of god, tell us about your dust collection! Do you use none and have the janitor do all the work, or is there something in play here?
Great build! Thank you for sharing!
I am also wondering when there will be more premium build related content coming out? Other than Adam’s “Sunday Sermon” talk and Q&A at Maker Faire on May 23, there has not been any premium build related content since MAY 7. Thanks in advance from a loyal fan!
