Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Rhombic Dodecahedron with Matt Parker!

In this special One Day Build filmed earlier this year, mathematician Matt Parker (StandUpMaths) visits the cave to build a rhombic dodecahedron with Adam! Be prepared for lots of fun geometry discussion as Adam and Matt try to make abstract math concepts tangible with a physical build. They also take this construction a few steps further by lining the inside of the polyhedron with mirrors and LED strips for an infinty mirrored effect!

  1. Oh, oh! You should build a quasicrystal!

I read “The Second Kind of Impossible” and a model really really helped me understanding the quasicrystal stuff! Amazing book, amazing prop!

  2. Is it bad that I can tell when something was filmed by the closeups on Adam’s hands?

My wife: I thought he was still on lockdown.
Me: No, this was earlier this year. You can tell it’s from the black fingernail era.

  3. No offense, but this video demands a Sean Charlesworth cam capturing his amusement as Adam and Matt try to work out the wiring. LOL

  4. I’d love to stuff some addressable LED strip into this thing. Would look really amazing with moving patterns in there.

  5. Like others have said, if you used neo pixels or some other species of addressable LED this would be amazing in a Timothy Leary sort of way …..

  6. One thing that got me about this build is how ridiculously low-entry this is to make. I mean, no painting… no gluing, no specialty hardware or tools. Some plastic, some metalized film. some tape. some more tape. and a strands of LED’s.

a great project, rather simple, project. And I have a nephew I need to corrupt introduce this stuff to.

On second thought… why wasn’t this glued up? gluing this up wouldn’t be *that* hard.

Hi! Anyway you can link to the LED lights and the automotive window tint used?

Adam said it was mylar. My guess is you could use any roll of metalized polyester film.

Mcmaster-carr has been a reliable source of oh-so-many things, including all films: https://www.mcmaster.com/polyester-(pet)-film/color~silver/

as for the LED’s… I imagine you could use any form of led strand/strips. Adafruit’s neopixels are – and addressable. whatever you get, I would suggest that thinner is better. I’m thinking I’ll use the ultraskinny strip: https://www.adafruit.com/product/4368

    which brings me to…

Crack, You’re right. this would be insane. I’m currently thinking of using this as the ‘avatar’ for my smart home. I use mycroft.ai and have a number of base devices. I’m thinking this would make a great pendant light that doubles as a status indicator… maybe I’m geeking out too much.
