Adam Savage’s Favorite Tools: Superglue and Glue Accelerators!

Adam explains his philosophy and processes for using cyanoacrylate–superglue–for modelmaking and small build projects. From the differences between thicknesses of glue to the ways you can speed up its curing with accelerators, Adam demonstrates his favorite ways of using CA glue and mistakes to avoid. Plus, the origin of how superglue came to be used in the special effects modelmaking industry! (The video was made possible by KiwiCo! 1. Adam- CA glue is wonderfully versatile, BUT should always be dispensed while wearing a carbon filter air mask! You have probably watched CSI heating the glue to reveal fingerprints. And I have glued clear plastic domes on a housing only to have them fog the next day. Well, it will do the same to your lungs! Artists and model makers are cavalier about chemical safety- please be careful!

  2. Adam- two helpful hints: First, since CA glue is catalyzed by humidity, I store my glue in sealed glass jar filled with Drierite to scavenge moisture- the tubes clog much more slowly. Second, as you mentioned cured CA is brittle. In woodworking we often use the CA as a “jig”. For example, spread wood glue between a lap joint, but leave a bit free of glue (it helps to dampen the wood with a moist towel first). Then put a drop of CA in that opening, and hand clamp. The CA will grab, and hold the joint in place while the wood glue sets.
