Adam Savage’s Favorite Tools: Machinist’s Blue Layout Fluid

Adam covers an essential tool he’s been using a lot lately in his machining journey, and that’s Dykem blue layout fluid for making precise marks on material when even a fine tip pen won’t do. Adam demonstrates how to use layout fluid with his recommended scribe and explains why it’s worth investing in a quality scribe for your projects!

  1. Very true on the layout

I have drilled holes on brand new very very expensive ski’s in the wrong place because I did not mark it properly and used the wrong side of the tape I had used. Much profanity was uttered.

When machining having it marked can be a very good reality check, even when using a DRO. For instance if you go from a chuck to a collet on a Bridgeport mill the table moves a substatial way down and if the head is tilted sidways ( ‘head out of tram’) the DRO does not tell you but you will be a mile off. The marking will show it

P.s. Sharpie/marker is also a reasonable layout medium (scribe the sharpie marking) and handy.

  2. The stuff is virtually impossible to buy off a shelf anywhere. Center Hardware has some spray on version but I don’t want to spray it all over my lathe.
