Adam Savage’s Very First Shop Project

Adam shares the story of the very first object he made in a shop, when he was twelve years old in his school’s shop class. This project was inspired by one of his favorite gags in The Little Rascals! More stories like this one are in Adam’s new book, Every Tool’s a Hammer, available now!

  1. Now I’m imagining a little Adam (with beard of course) trying to grap everything and everyone for a couple of days.

  2. “Look at this awesome thing I made. It was very easy to make and I have loved this object for four decades. But you should totally not make one.”

    Well played, Adam. :p

  3. I’m shuddering at the thought of getting snagged by that thing in the gut with pulling away making it worse. That’s messed up, ha.

  4. We didn’t have metalwork shop class at my school, it was too small. There was a minimum population of pupils required before they’d get certain licenses, I think it was 500 students, and we had but 350 kids at the entire school (age 11 to 17, apply as equivalent to your grade system). So that was something I still have never had any experience in.

But as my woodworking skills were godawful chaos, maybe that’s a good thing in my case. I am terrible at making physical things, hence why I only ever stay in the digital realm. I’m still a maker, but not of anything like you guys tend to showcase on Tested.

  5. I was just recently organizing my tools and came across a slotted screwdriver I made in Junior High. I remember the satisfaction of forging it–the bright metal conforming to my hammering–and the patience I demanded of myself to make it as symmetrical and neat as I could.

Pretty sweet little thing if I do say so! And it works!

  6. I hope this is not out of line, (maybe because it is Friday afternoon?) but my FIRST thought was, is it cold in there or is Adam just excited to see his pinchy grabby toy again?

Second thought, I always wanted one of those, and make a really long one but have control over the grabby end. Can’t say I’ve given it much thought but no idea how to do that. Maybe a one day build!

  7. Well, now that you can afford to buy a boxing glove (or even two!), isn’t it about time you created your original vision? With proper measurements, this time. 😁
