Adam Savage Wears Lumecluster’s Phoenix Gauntlets!

Armor designer Melissa Ng (aka Lumecluster) visits Adam’s cave and brings her new Phoenix Gauntlets, a modular design that she’s been designing and prototyping for two years. Based on historically accurate 15th century gothic armor, these beautiful gauntlets are also surprisingly flexible and comfortable. Adam can’t get enough of them!

  1. These pieces are mind blowing. Just when I think I’ve gotten a handle on design and production, true genius comes along. Brilliant work Melissa. Simply brilliant.

  2. I definitely recommend Knyght Errant’s (Ian LaSpina’s) Youtube channel. Think I’ve watched every single upload. Cool that Melissa collaborated with him to get the authentic articulation.

  3. Pause half way through to comment about how amazing this is. I am going to be showing this to my prop and costume crew at today’s pre production meeting.

  4. Curious if she’s found a way to make the Task 16 stink less. I’ve got some 3 year old molds made out of it that I still can’t bring in the house because of how eye-wateringly strong they smell.

  5. I love the product, but I’m still in the dark about the process of them being made. I think it was mentioned in the video Ms. Ng 3-D prints the molds enclosures so she can use a small amount of silicone, but don’t see an example of this on her youtube channel (I did see an example of her pulling an item from a mold, but nothing else mold related). Wondering if there are any forthcoming details on the process of making these gorgeous items or if there are pointers to information out there I missed on Ms. Ng’s site/youtube channel/instagram feed.

    Thanks!

  6. Stunning work!

What I find interesting is how she takes the oft-repeated thought “surely there’s a better way to do this” and then figures out and implements a better way to do it. Most others either struggle along with the traditional methods or throw money at the problem, but Melissa makes the effort.

A lot of makers work from the thought “wouldn’t it be cool if…” but this is different from that.

  7. I’ve looked through many of Melissa’s videos (on both the gauntlets and her previous armor projects) and haven’t seen any details surrounding the casting process. I’ve seen a lot about the modeling beforehand and the sanding/painting/fitting afterward, but the only thing I’ve seen about the casting has been pulling something from a mold. From Adam’s comments, her method of creating molds is unique and having some information about that is something I’d be quite interested in.

  8. Can’t seem to edit my comment (likely my browser extensions stopping something) so adding another comment.

Looking at http://lumecluster.com/modular-phoenix-gauntlets/ I can see 3-D prints of the prototype gauntlets. Then, the next picture I see is Gauntlet plates ready for assembly. The question I have is how do we get from the final, prepped 3-D print (after sanding and such) to the production of the plates. If the details are out there and I’ve simply overlooked them, if you have a link I’d love to be enlightened.
