Adam Savage’s NASA ACES Spacesuit Replica!

Adam Savage’s newest spacesuit replica project is the NASA Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES)! Known as the “pumpkin suit”, this iconic orange pressure suit was worn by Space Shuttle astronauts since 1994. Adam’s replica is finally complete and ready for its first test fitting ahead of New York Comic Con!

  1. Nice Suit! I love it. Excellent work!

If you put the helmet on display, note that the bailer bar should never be down if the pressure visor (the clear one) is not.

One cool detail I would add on are the colored and lettered tags that go on all of the various separate items of the suit (helmet, gloves boots, etc.) so the astronauts can tell which part belongs to whom when they go to put them back on at the end of the flight.

One anectodical story I’ve heard from a few different astronauts about the ACES. The suits are not custom fitted to each person but come off the rack in different sizes. You get issued a suit that fits you the closest. During a 12 to 17 day flight in free fall, your spine straightens out and you grow a couple of inches. If the suit you were issued is pretty close fitting to begin with, when you go to put it back on before reentry, the neck ring bears down on your collar bones and it can be pretty excruciating. Apparently some astronauts came to dread having the landing scrubbed for the day because it meant that they had to take off and put the suit back on again. Of course, once you’re back under 1G, your spine re compresses and the problem goes away.

  2. I like that the expression Adam gets when the cold water hits him, is the same as surfers in their wet suits in the grip of a “fluid excursion” 🙂

  3. i don’t understand he would not use his name on this suit.

i mean, it’s a space suit and it’s build to these insane specs. so i assume anyone will know it’s adam. tag or not.

Also, this is insane cool. i hope he will now build one of new space-x suits.

  4. Looks a slight bit tight in the crotch there, Adam. Hopefully you are trying it on spine-extended, and it’ll be more comfortable once you’re back in Earth-Gravity…

  5. This looks magnificent! I tried so very hard for such a long time, not to sound like a freaked out fan boy, but THIS is it, I cannot hold it back anymore. I want, no, I need to thank you and the Tested crew so very much. I work as a paramedic and although it is an exciting job, there is not much creativity in it. And that was quite tiring for me. Then, a few years ago, browsing through endless videos, I stumble upon a familiar face. In an instant my love for model building and creating was rekindled and I found my way of pleasing that part of my brain that screamed of boredom for so long. Why am I blabbing about this now? THIS suit is the first thing that jumped to my mind, as I decided to become a maker. This is my first project (and it ist still a work in progress) and I am pretty sure, you know how I felt, when I saw the life size print in the back of the shop in one of the videos. I And here it is! And now I deeply hope for a more detailed video on it, so I can get a glimpse of as many details as I can get! Again, thank you!

    Freaked out fan boy away!

  6. With the increasing need of air flow fans in Adam’s Incognito costumes. has anyone thought about incorporating a Bluetooth ear piece or headphone that could be linked to an external phone or another device that would allow for better audio for Adam? (ie hearing people)

  7. I just wanted to say thanks for the films and inspiration this year. I just received my print and I thought I’d create an Adam character for my comic (The Brexit Comic) by way of thanks.
