  1. I can’t wait to visit this exhibit the next time I’m in NYC. I grew up near Baltimore, watching Captain Kangaroo, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, and (of course) the Muppets. Someone bought me a small hand puppet when I was around three years old and it was one of my prized possessions (I still have it). I can’t say that I wanted to be a puppeteer “when I grew” up…it never occurred to me that such a career path was an option, for whatever reason. But watching videos like this makes me think on what might have been.

I believe I would have loved to work in this art form, in this medium, and with creative people like Jim Henson. There’s a bittersweet tinge to such nostalgia-infused hypothetical musings, not only because of Henson’s untimely death (precluding the possibility of my ignorant younger self from working for and with him), but also the rapid transition to CGI production in the 1990s.

Though I grew up with practical effects, animatronics, and puppetry, the world sort of moved on (not ubiquitously, to be sure, though no less persistently). Even had I been cognizant of an interest in the art form, and been both skilled and fortunate enough to make a break into that wonderful little niche of the entertainment industry, I’m not sure I could have enjoyed the same creative space that Jim Henson built from the feet up. At least, not for very long. And that’s what makes me sad.

I think the world of entertainment would be very different if Jim Henson were still alive today. If that creative spark he possessed had not been extinguished prematurely, imagine what could have been.

    Another bittersweet thought.

On a more positive note, the huge resurgence of practical effects, animatronics, and puppetry we’ve seen with such recent films as The Force Awakens and Rogue One, among others, I do have hope that Jim Henson’s world might find some kind of rebirth, if only in the minds of those who remember it fondly. With modern technology, so many advances in materials and computer control, imagine what can be done…bringing the physicality and the reality of puppetry and animatronics back to the creative process.

  2. Wow i hope they make a book out of this it would not be the same thing as seeing the exhibition but i would love to have this.
