Adam Savage’s Maker Tour: MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms (Part 3)

The next stage of machines making machines isn’t rapid prototyping, it’s rapid prototyping of rapid prototyping. In this third part of his tour of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, Adam delves into some mind-bending meso technologies. (This series and tour is made possible by The Fab Foundation and Chevron.)

  1. ok so i know i made excuses for the guy in the first video but goddamn does he actually just have no awareness about interrupting other people and not even for especially critical information. I hope he sees these videos and the comments below them and learns exactly how insufferable he is when he interrupts other people.

that out of the way holy shit is that cool. making your own machine with cardboard and a laser cutter? that’s fuckin awesome. also it never occurred to me to only cut one layer in corrugated cardboard to enable folding. that’s super cool.

  2. Seeing the less expensive materials used in the construction of things makes me wonder if this technology can be put to use in the medical field for lower cost devices (prosthetics, hearing aids, etc). People can have choices to meet their expected daily activities – a leg prosthetic for a day of reading may not need the strength of one used for a day with a planned long hike. Parents can get new prosthetic devices faster as their child grows. That would be awesome.

There were moments in the video that Adam’s face reminded me of the Far Side cartoon with the student asking to be excused because “My brain is full”. The look is more than justified if the three sets of videos were shot in one day.

    Thanks for sharing.

  3. you can “print” simple PCB’s on a 3D printer. as you can print plastic in one hot end, and extrude solder in a 2nd hot end. it’s just not very effective. it’s far easier to just add a dremel tool to your head and scrape copper of a PCB.

it’s funny to see adam get upset with that guy, trying to get the subject back to the girl and being “professional” but you still his level going up. it’s funny.

cool to see the repraps going to cardboard. you could cut out the template by hand, make a 3D printer, and then print a prusa to make a better printer, that you then can use to print parts to make a laser cutter, that then can cut more cardboard 3D printers…

i don’t know the steps that are going to go one, but it end with the terminator i asume.

  4. This was the coolest video yet. As previously stated, the guy could have spoken less, but I was glad to see that the young woman held her own and interrupted back. She has some amazing work there.

I was thrilled to see the projects where people had assembled machines out of simple materials to do such unique things. That part showed the power of the Maker culture, and I will always be impressed.
