How Weta Workshop Made Ghost In The Shell’s Thermoptic Suit!

We go behind the scenes at Weta Workshop to learn how their costume fabricators made the unique silicone “Thermoptic” suit that Scarlett Johansson wears in the upcoming Ghost in the Shell. With Tested’s own Danica wearing the costume, Adam Savage chats with costume technician Flo Foxworthy about the design and challenge of making this skin-toned practical suit!

  1. I just saw the trailer the other day and re watched the original. These Tested segments are getting me excited. Also really wonderful to see this kind of content before a release. Thank you Tested for sharing the access.

And yes , well done Danica you are a trooper

  2. I get so conflicted, On one hand these amazing props are showing me the care, and love this movie is getting on the set, and makes me want to see it.

On the other hand I’m still really pissed at the lack of Asian actors in this film. It makes me really sad. I love scarlet, I think she’s a solid actor, she’s great in everything I see her in, but man…I just wish she wasn’t in this movie as The Major.

  3. ok, from this site I learned every costume tells a story…. i am fascinated by what story this might tell. . .

  4. Norm, you are a very lucky man. Great job Danica. Adam, I’ve been a huge fan since Mythbusters and I love the Tested channel.

  5. How breathable was the suit, or should I ask how did they deal with overheating of the wearers?

    Thanks for the video

  6. I’m with you but i can appriciate great craftsmanship when i see it. plenty of bad movies can have fantastic practical effects

  7. Great work by all at TESTED. These features are unprecedented glimpses of a major film before public release. WETA Workshop is in a class by itself.

  8. Wonder if this thing is limited to certain scenes with it or if trailers were done before it or something?

Looking at the trailers it looks much flatter, like the whole thing was one piece and shoulder pads were just a differently coloured section. Odd to make this suit only to have it completely replaced by CG anyway.

  9. To be able to fit into a superhero’s tailored costume – that’s got to be good for the self-esteem. Closest I ever got was “Herbie -the Fat Fury”.

  10. The magnetic fastners they used on the pauldrons look like Fidlock fasteners. They make a ton of different magnetic fasteners I’ve used in soft-goods designs in the past. Super cool stuff, and (if indeed that’s what was used) super cool to see on a hero suit like this! http://www.fidlock.com/en/fasteners.html

  11. that suit is amazing—– well done Danica

THANK You for wearing the suit for tested.

I hope Scarlett looks as good in it in the movie
