My Shop When I Was 20

When I was 20, I had a small studio in Brooklyn, plus alginate and 20 pounds of plaster bandages to experiment with.

This is me at 20, in my small studio on Carroll St. in Park Slope, Brooklyn, right off of Prospect Park. I was single for much of the time I lived here, and I remember getting a lot done. I learned about alginate about this time from a special effects company a friend was working for.

I also learned that New York Central Art Supply sold plaster bandages in bulk. So I bought 20 pounds. I made castings with alginate and plaster all over the place. I cast my face, my ears, props I’d made. I remember pulling a lot of hair out getting myself out of my various molds.

I was living there for free, illegally warehousing the place for the landlord, who was a collector of my father’s paintings. I finally got kicked out over an incident involving an escaped snake, but I’d rather not discuss that.

  1. Awesome picture. thanks for sharing. I don’t know you other than from here and the show but the box of hot glue, the sortimo of cassette tapes, outlet strip filled to capacity, An early drill press(Bridgeport) Scifi drawing and what looks like a model of a tank. The only thing missing is an xacto knife and a lathe and you’d be setup just as you are now(on a more modest budget). The more tings change the more they stay the same. Thanks for inspiring so many makers.

  2. Love seeing proto-shops.

Here’s my first shop, in the garage of my first apartment after my wife and I got married:

This is my part maker, part moto shop today, which I rent:

This is the shop I’m about to build in the house my wife and I just bought, which will replace the current shop:

Adam, inspired by your mention of this, I actually have a 3,300+ Evernote document entitled “A Philosophy of Working” to outline how I want to organize this new shop. Actually owning the property changes everything. So much potential now.

  3. I am 46 and still don’t have a “My First Shop” picture. Although I do have a one bed flat full of work spaces and Needful Things;)

  4. i too prefer my condoms lubricated 😉 thanks for sharing the pic Adam.. id love to see some more!
