Adam Savage Meets Theo Jansen’s Strandbeest!

Dutch artist Theo Jansen brings his Strandbeest creatures to San Francisco to walk along our coast! Adam has been fascinated by these giant PVC-constructed machines for a long time, and finally gets up close to meet one in person and chat with its creator. Watch how the Strandbeest strolls across the sand!

  1. I love how Theo Jansen talks about them as evolving and relates them to evolution processes. This is something this defiantly something designers should be bringing to consumer tech.

I was so lucky my recent trip to San Francisco intersected with the exhibit at the Exploratorium. It was so awesome to see them in real life! The Exploratorium was definitely one of my favourite part of my visit.

Can wait to see Adam make his now!

  2. That is so awesome. I really wish I could have seen one of those full-sized strandbeests in person.

  3. Out of curiosity: I’ve noticed that recently Adam and Norm had started pronouncing it as “strand-baste”, but here, the creator himself pronounces in “strand-beast.” What’s with the shift in pronunciation?

Strand Baste is how you would say it in dutch, but as Theo was speaking to a English native speaker, he pronounced it in English as well.

I think it’s a courtesy thing towards the person you are speaking to. If i talk to a English speaker, i would refer to my name “Peter” as you would say in the USA, and not as “Pieter” how it actually is pronounced in dutch.

however, i also found it funny that Norm and Adam have been trying to pronounce it correct for 2 years now, and then Theo just pronounced it in English.

  5. Had the chance to see the exhibit in Chicago. I remember your show and tell of the Japanese miniature models so when they came to Chicago I couldn’t wait to see the real ones in person. They even had a few set up that you could push or pull to walk. Amazing!

  6. I did not expect the sound of them walking on the sand to be so delightful. Also, I think maybe the Dutch are just better than the rest of us.

  7. So, they “infect” their creators with their “genetic material”? Sounds sinister.

Why do I get the feeling that Adam making one of these will be a video series? I know just from looking that it’ll be more than just a One Day Build.

As I recall from a podcast he’s doing it live at the exploratorium as a one or two day build.

    I hadn’t watched/listened to that podcast yet.

I just wanted to have a triple quote on this thread.

  11. there’s some funniness to it, but given that there’s commenters (youtube, admittedly) who refer to adam’s & norm’s ‘weird’ pronunciation vs theo’s & ‘all us normal people’s’ pronunciation, i’m all for at least trying to get things right. i.e. niche as neesh, not nitch, because french, gyros as yeeros, not gyro, because greek and not a plural, etc.

as a german, it’s always a pleasure, for example, to hear will pronounce gesundheit really close to perfect. even if it wasn’t as good, just seeing someone be aware of foreign language roots and make an effort is cool, methinks. yay acknowledging other people/cultures/languages and trying to understand them. even in small things.
