Shop Tips: Mixing Superglue and Baby Powder

This week, Frank teaches us a tip he learned while working for toy companies. By mixing different amounts of superglue and baby powder, you can make a putty that can be used to patch resin castings, almost like makeshift body filler!

  1. Baking soda also works as an instant set superglue filler. Fill the void or gap with baking soda, apply a drop or two of thin super glue and voila, rock hard filler.

  2. From what I remember, CA (cyanoacrylate) glue is ‘set’ in the presence of ‘OH’ ions, or a ‘base’ solution with a PH greater than 7 (vs acid less than 7). We use to try and make our own CA kicker liquid/spray in college using baking soda and water, which never really worked all that well. Now, thinking back, it might have been the minerals in the water messing with the reaction, maybe distilled water would have worked properly.

Having said that baking soda powder directly applied definitely worked but in our model airplane building wasn’t really fit for purpose. The free ‘OH’ theory also supports why corn starch works, and why CA glues your fingers together so well, as most organic stuff is ‘slighty base’ with free OH ions hanging around. CA is great for balsa/wood building in model airplanes because as the glue seeps and soaks into the wood it finds more OH hanging around and cures as it goes. Same holds true for the ridges in your fingerprints 😛

  3. I heard you guys mention this in passing a while back and
have been using this technique ever since. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I also works grate in repairs.

The spines on my dragon head cane broke off and I used this
method to re-build them and haven’t had any issues with it.

  4. ooh, so this is the plastics version of wood glue plus sawdust!

or, the other way around, if you’re working in wood, you can use wood glue plus sawdust from whatever lumber you’re working on right now, to make a colour-matched filler. y’know, for when that joint fit wasn’t perfect and is in plain view.

  5. Is this mixture sandable, similar to how a wood filler is? Any issue with it taking paint differently than the surrounding material?

  6. Yup use distilled water, its magic stuff I always have a couple liters handy in case I need it for something.

Used to amaze friends by powering on and using a phone under distilled water 😉

  7. Cabosil (fumed silica) is a standard resin thickener used in industry. Glass microballoons are great for adding volume and improving sandability.
