Tested Builds: DIY Arcade Cabinet Kit, Part 1

Time to start more weeks of builds! This week, we’re joined by Jeremy Williams to assemble his new Porta-Pi DIY Arcade Cabinet Kit. the Porta-Pi is a desktop-sized arcade emulator that runs on either a Raspberry Pi or mini computer. Jeremy had built an earlier version, but the new model has a larger screen and more powerful computer inside. Let’s get to building! (Follow along the rest of the week by joining the Tested Premium member community!)

  1. This is too funny. Jeremy posted a picture of his Porta-Pi on Twitter back in March. This inspired me to buy my own kit, which I just finished a week ago (the 10.1″ version they are building on the video). Overall, this is a fun kit to build and Ryan at http://www.retrobuiltgames.com has a lot of great resources to help you along.

  2. Did you guys ever finish the sit-down custom arcade cabinet? I’d love to see how it turned out!

I am quite interested in seeing the end of this too.

  4. I realize you guys are in California (as am I), but I really want to see you guys launch bottle rockets out of that blue 3d printed pencil holder thing on the shelf behind Jeremy.

  5. Thanks! I’m using the Pi 2 in mine and am very interested in your hardware/software mods that take you away from the base design. It has been a fun platform to tweak and I am on the lookout for more modification ideas.

wasn’t there a desk or something that was never finished? Was it a standing desk?

  7. Cool build! So many haters on the youtube video tho…. surprise surprise.

Youtube comments are almost extra entertainment at this point. “How dare you ask for money so I can watch content I want to watch that the other youtube channels aren’t making! You never make anything for us youtube audience besides 2 (up to 4) podcasts each week, single day builds, previews, reviews, event coverage, show n tell, the Talking Room, …”

  8. I like the Wood. . . . …… but it makes me wonder why computers arent built out of wood… is it because wood doesn’t create a faraday cage? But I have seen so many plastic Raspberry Pi cases….

Norm and Wes built a tabletop MAME classic arcade gaming machine. But we never got to see the conclusion of that video series. IIRC, they were still working on the monitor the last time we saw it..

  10. Our buddy Steve Lin currently has the monitor for repair, and hoping to get it back next month. We’ve identified the problem for why it blew out…

  11. I wish you guys could come up with an alternative to premium membership. Im sure there are a lot of people like me who dont want to add another subscription/yearly cost to their lives when cable cutting was supposed to help with that.

I find it a bit weird that you guys have 1.2 million youtube subscribers but most of your videos chill at around 50k views, that’s only 4% and it assumes all views comes via subscribers which isnt the case.

Still hope you guys change your business direction, because paywalling content is usually a poor decision when it comes to replaceable entertainment.

  12. Thank you for the update, Norm.

Many of us were wondering if you had ever completed the cabinet. Please shoot a video when you do.. 😉

  13. 4 days left in the month for the poster promo, what’s up for existing members? The last I remember hearing anything was the TIOAT before Comic-con.

  14. I’ve been fiddling with acrylic glue for ages. The worst part is that any drip or string will leave a permanent mark. I’ve found that mixing acrylic glue with acetone will thin it out and increase work time.

Although wasteful I’ve also found that mixing up a batch of acetone and glue in a cup then using a needle tip to dab it on your model is easiest to keep it from running everywhere.

  15. Interesting project. I do restorations / rebuilds of classics as a hobby for a “retro” arcade bar in Washington DC call Atlas Arcade. Make me want to get started on my Ms. Pac Man cocktail bar top project I’ve been planning.

  16. Ahh, that’s too bad. I hope you guys do a conclusion to that series once the monitor is fixed/replaced!
