Adam Savage at Maker Faire 2012: Why We Make

Adam Savage’s talk at Maker Faire Bay Area 2012. Adam tells a great story about his Indiana Jones hat, how he got started in building his obsessions, and why makers should embrace the things they can’t help but make.

  1. His talks are always brilliant. So inspirational.

Got a surreal feeling the two times he said tested.com. It’s great that he’s embracing it more and more. The tested team is just amazing right now, and getting more of Adam will only make it even better.

  2. Good on you Adam, I am no longer an engineering student but in high school I was in the engineering program. I made a TV projector as my senior project. It was insanely over-sized but it worked well(still works well but I never use it). I was also head of my TSA club senior year(Technical Student Association) although it was closed due to budgetary reasons like you mentioned(basically not enough people joined so the school diverted funds). I still love to build things but engineering is no longer my major.

Anyways, really enjoyed the video, great stuff. Maybe when I graduate college I’ll make it back up to the Bay Area for maker faire.

  3. Wow, this video got up fast! Great job, guys! And great speech. I’m listening to it at work.

  4. An excellent address Mr Savage. A shame you can’t come to the Uk and inspire our whole country to start manufacturing again!

  5. Love these speeches. I also really like how Adam is supporting Tested at other venues. Hopefully it will get the word out and make this site a hot spot.

  6. It’s great seeing Adam doing stuff like this, he clearly loves what he does and seeing anyone show such a huge amount of passion about anything is awesome.

  7. What a great an inspiring speech. He is right on every level, that the ingenuity to create and build is what makes societies great and it something that is lacking in todays world. Makes me happy to see people out there like Adam working to make this goal a reality. I also love the Tested references. Tested is going to be huge and important with a guy like Adam pushing the brand and bringing people here to see what goes on here and what we can achieve at Tested.

  8. TESTED PLUG!!

I dunno, when he said about making your own things and some people cheered, I was kind of on the audience’s side.

  9. A great speech as always Adam.

Also a plus for the two plugs of Tested. I hope this is a sign that Adam it really into this. I would like to see some stuff from Jamie though.

  10. Very cool talk and quite an interesting topic. Losing our connection to the joy of creating things is probably one of the worst effects of capitalism.

  11. I thought I heard “make what you can’t not make” maybe your comment was just a typo?

I feel like he’s saying “make what you’re intrinsically compelled to make.”

  12. Adam Savage drips passion. You just know how deep is love for making is by listening to him. Kids are not going to grow up trying to be like Han Solo, they’ll want to be like Adam! I guess that in itself is very inspirational for the older folks like me.
