Inside Adam Savage’s Cave: C-3PO Protocol Droid

Adam shows off the shiny gold-plated C-3PO that stands in the middle of his workshop. Learn about the process of vacuum metallizing that gave this chrome coating. Believe it or not, there’s an interesting story behind it!

  1. I’m glad Adam mentioned Metropolis because about halfway through this video I had that mind-blowing revelation of how much C-3PO must be inspired by that film. Great video, incredible story!

  2. haven’t seen the standard issue Vader helmet

I love how he almost knocks him over out of enthusiasm 😀

    “Sorry buddy…”

  3. No way! If you ask me Adam is the C-3PO to Jamie’s R2-D2. Both incredibly intelligent and masters at their crafts but Adam seems to be more out there and speaking to mere mortals about what they do. Purely outside observation of course, I have great respect for Jamie and don’t mean that as a slight. I’d love to see the live show to see how they handle a crowd up close.

Also Grant Imahara inside a C-3P0 suit?!? I won’t believe it! Sounds like a myth that needs to be busted with video posted on Tested…

  4. Fairly easy to confirm, as Grant detailed the entire experience at a w00tstock! event. His story includes travelling around the world, being on Oprah Winfrey’s talkshow, coming face-to-face with a full-size X-wing in Australia and meeting Carrie Fisher while in costume. Go to youtube and search for “Grant Imahara w00tstock!” to see the video, it has photos and everything. =) But I second a new video for Tested about the whole ordeal as well, haha

  5. I was about to shush you for shooting down my Grant/C-3P0 video request until the last sentence. Thanks so much for the info!

I’m sorry if I’m mistaken but I don’t recall your username prior to the split. I just wanted to sincerely say thanks. You’ve been killing it on the commenting here and at least for a lurker like me you’ve been providing some very helpful input. If I’m remembering correctly then “Welcome aboard!” if not then “I blame internet blindness, it’s a real condition I swear!”.

Edit: Either that or this is the most advanced AI ever seen in human history and we should all fear for our lives…

  6. You would be correct, while I had stumbled by Tested every once in a while, I only really started visiting regularly when Adam and Jamie came onboard, being a longtime Mythbusters fan and maker.

I quickly realized I had been missing out on a lot of awesome by not coming here earlier. =)

  7. this is super awesome. I’m 5’8″ and about 130lbs, and one of my goals in life is to get a c3po costume i can wear.
