I was delighted to see your piece about HAL in Peter Jackson's collection. In 1972, I found the HAL artefacts, the faceplate and the memory door key, in a junkshop in Paddington, London. They were discovered at the bottom of a tea chest, along with piles of other props. I purchased the bits and pieces for ten shillings (old money equivalent to 50 pence). The Nikon lens was not to be found but, after 25 years or so had passed, I discovered the type of lens used in the film 2001 - A Space Odyssey. After some searching, I finally managed to buy a lens and was delighted to discover that it fitted into the aperture perfectly. HAL and the other artefacts were auctioned at Christies in London and fetched a magnificent price, far in excess of that which I paid.
I hope you will find this information of interest.
