Android: When is it a must-have?

  • Aww. Poor you and your iPhone, Nathan. :P

Up here, at least until the summer, I'm stuck with CDMA phones. Personally, all of the Android phones have had me drooling, but I have yet to actually have enough one minute of hands-on time with one. I think I want one... provided that plans aren't intensely expensive when 3G+ finally hits my area.
  • @nathan:
On the podcast, I believe Will and Norm mentioned the Nexus One was coming to other networks. I can't remember which one it was, maybe Verizon. You could possibly go that route though. I'm pretty sure they said it was coming very soon too.
  • @fry: The Droid has a physical keyboard, although I've heard it's not all that great, the people I know who have Droids seem to like it okay.

@Kane: Don't I know it! But if something was officially announced for this summer I'd consider holding out. I get really frustrated with Apple drones who think Steve Jobs poops gold, but I can't deny the iPhone is a great device. (Though I don't like their app store nonsense and being able to more freely download/sideload software is a huge  bonus for me.)
  • Verizon is getting the N1 in a few weeks. This means that a Sprint-compatible version is being manufactured as we speak, which makes me hope the rumors of Sprint picking up the N1 are true. I don't like the concept of the Supersonic, mostly because 4.3 inches is effing massive for a phone (3.7 is already pushing it) and if the thing has a kickstand as it is supposed to, I'd put money on it being impossible to pocket comfortably. I'm a big fan of Android but I wasn't able to buy an Android phone when I bought my current phone since I'm stuck on AT&T. Do yourself a favor and ditch AT&T though. They're just going downhill in every aspect of their service if you don't have an iPhone (and even then, their network stability has been waning, according to friends).

If you feel like keeping AT&T, grab the Desire. If you don't go AT&T and get the N1 on Verizon (or Sprint, *crosses fingers* I feel like the more times I say it the more it's likely to become true), you can always download and replace the standard keyboard with the much-lauded Swype keyboard or the hi-res HTC Sense keyboard ripped from the Desire, which is supposedly much better than the stock version. The good thing about Android is that it doesn't limit you at all in terms of what you want to customize, as Will pointed out in passing during the N1 video review. The Droid's physical keyboard really isn't all that great by the way, so you're pretty much stuck waiting for either a Nexus One or an unannounced superphone that will come out later this year.

I would say buy a cheap phone (maybe the Moment) on Sprint to get used to Android (although it's an outdated version) and play around with that for the time being until something better pops up- Sprint has the 2nd largest coverage area in the country and it's the cheapest out of all the top networks. They just need a better selection of smartphones.

Edit: I should also point out that the videos leaking out about the Supersonic don't make it look nearly as bad as it sounded, thankfully.
  • When it's affordable to a broke ass college student...or maybe that's just me.
  • @Kane: I was just at Best Buy picking up FFXIII (yay), and I saw the HTC Devour, which I hadn't gotten to poke at before. They didn't have a live demo I could play with and the sales rep didn't know its specs (oh, Best Buy), but it definitely had a nice keyboard, at least for my personal tastes-- very separated buttons = easier to type without looking, yay!

That said, I *believe* its specs are a touch below even the Droid Eris-- I can't find definitive specs anywhere, actually, but it doesn't appear to have a Snapdragon and it ships with Android 1.6 (though I'd expect it to get the same upgrade to 2.1 eventually).
  • Despite the (varyingly) hefty price, Android is one of the best things to happen to phones in a long time.  I'd suggest getting one as soon as possible.

    That's a motorola phone :-P

Edit: Ripped out all the spec information I pasted and I'm replacing it with a link to the conveniently new Engadget review of the Devour :-P (here)
  • @Jayge: Ha! No wonder I couldn't find it ;) My bad!
  • Never.

Very informative. But I guess only one word is necessary when you just want +1 to post count.
  • Yeah, the Nexus One on Verizon would be a nice plus.  I wish all the nicest hardware (iPhone, Nexus, etc.) weren't tied to the crappiest carriers.

T-Mobile ain't that bad in most cities. Where do you live?
  • @choffy21:
    Right now, South Carolina.
Next week, Tokyo for 2 years, so it'll be a moot point anyway.
  • @Addfwyn: Oh then don't even worry about it. Your phones are, like, 10 years ahead of our American phones anyways.

Give it 2 or 3 weeks then.

March 23, if I'm not mistaken.

If Verizon owners prayed to the right gods, hopefully.

I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you, but it's not an insult so much as an observation. Perusing through your post history proves my point.

Not really. And yes it's an insult, when you come out of nowhere and are a dick for no reason, that's insulting. Bam, insult.

He was pointing out that your post does absolutely nothing to add anything to the discussion besides making people who read it go "ugh." If you're going to offer an opinion (especially a rather drastic one like that) then you should be prepared to have it challenged or to be asked to justify it.
  • It isn't yet.  The app store isn't good as you can see from the N1 video review.  There is so much garbage in it and that is basically what you are looking at when getting and Android based phone.
  • @Skytylz: What App store isn't filled with 90% useless garbage?

True, atleast the iPhone's doesn't have a porn app every other one.
