Adam Savage Explores the Props of Blade Runner 2049!

Before Adam Savage watched Blade Runner 2049, he stepped behind the scenes of the film’s secretive production and visited the prop department where prop master Doug Harlocker and his team built intricate hand props, weapons, and futuristic wearable devices. Doug walks Adam through the some of these hero and stunt props, including many that you may now recognize. Very minor spoilers within!

  1. I love that modern prop makers come across almost as curators or museum restorers. Care in how they carry themselves, and present and speak to the objects. The WETA videos had the same character. There’s a measure of pride and preciousness that seems different from past where makers objects were disposable and temporary.

Long gone are the days where piles of props land in a dumpster. Its nice to see these treated as a commodity with elite value, to be archived or auctioned as ultra high end collectibles.

  2. Hey Joey, Adam examines one of the knives (the razor scalpel in particular) for around 30 seconds or so around the 12 minute mark, thought he was going to say something about it – maybe he did but it got left on the cutting room floor. Anyhow, my buddy Robert Amsler made those particular blades, so if Adam would like one for his collection, could you or he reach out to Robert? He has a limited BR 2049 edition of the hurricane razor.

You can look him up on facebook at AmslerKnives (it won’t let me hotlink)

  3. i wanna see more of the holographic manipulator being used. that looks like a fascinating prop. i want that more than the guns for myself.

  4. Must be quite the rush get that kind of close-up to all those wonderful toys, but with sort of mixed “heaven or hell” feelings. Fingers must itch something awful. Hope you took lots of pictures so we can enjoy future one day builds of for example the new blasters. Thanks for a nice vid!

  5. I would actually love a lengthy video of propmasters discussing cases and foam for cases and designing the cutouts. It seems trivial, but there’s a real need for methodical consideration when you’re permanently, or semi-permanently, designing storage like that, whether it’s for a tool box or a prop or a piece of gear like a camera or drone. That’s one of the things I do at work weekly, and I’m always looking for inspiration.

  6.   well, your comment just got your buddy some of my money! Great looking functional knives, and the movie tie in is an added bonus! Thanks for sharing the maker.
