Show and Tell: Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid Project

For this week’s Show and Tell, Norm invites you back into his home office to check out two of his new favorite things–both Star Wars themed! The first is a great Death Star rug from Thinkgeek, and the second is a 1/6th scale Imperial Probe Droid model that Norm has upgraded with some minor hacking.

  1. Great hack, and it’s great to see your collection of stuff. GAMEFRAME! Yay! Companion Cube! YAY!

I’m anxiously waiting for the R2 unit to come out. I got to see one of the final prototypes (with packaging) last week!

  2. Not for me. I think you’re experiencing a recurring bug where the videos get jumbled on the front page, try clearing your cache and see if it solves the issue. 🙂

  3. Gotta love Ikea shelves. Just got some of those to clean up my office as well. What books do you have on there, and which ones do you recommend?

  4. the droid’s form factor makes me wonder if a, say, 1:4 scale model could be made to house a quadcopter in its body.

the body silhouette is defined primarily by the tapered outer wall. the upper side of the body can’t be seen, so can be left open for maximum air intake. the lower part of the silhouette is broken up by the dangling arms, so it should be comparatively easy to hide exhaust ports for 4 rotors there.

    now that would be scary.

  5. Hey Norm, I enjoyed the video (the x-wing v. tie fighter playing on the rug brought be right back to my childhood). Thanks for inviting us into your home! I was checking out the shelves you use for collectibles & books, when I had an idea. Have you thought about creating a few doors using the companion cube, or even the 8-bit art? That could create a hiding spot for some of the things you don’t need on display, and also create more room for featuring your growing collectibles.

On a related note, I think I may be planning a trip to Ikea to do it myself!

  6.   that sounds like some build. Are you going to try?
Thanks for the show and tell Norm. Really enjoyed it. Whould like to see the final droid.

  7. hell no! i have zero idea of quadcopters, RC in general, or even electronics. it appeared feasible to my newb’s eyes, and i did like the sound of the idea. 😉

  8.   you sound like the prime candidate to tackle the project, but it is dangerous to go it alone. Is there anybody here that would be willing to play a theory game? What would it take to house a quad copter inside that droid and make it fly?
