Adam Savage Explores the 3D Printing and Modelmaking Shop at Smithsonian Exhibits!

Smithsonian Exhibits produces replicas, dioramas, mannequins, object mounts and more for many of the Smithsonian museums. Adam talks to Carolyn Thome and Chris Hollshwander, modelmakers who use the very oldest — and the very newest — technologies to make artifacts accessible to all.

  1. Well Adam, I was thinking about adding the ZPrinter 850 to my tool collection (I do have a small PLA/ABS Printer), but looking at the price…WHEW! $45,000 USD for a USED one! That is crazy cool, but crazy expensive! I need to go work at the Smithsonian! LOL

  2. This is just brilliant! My department does this on a small scale to produce replica artefacts – sometimes for handling kits used with schools, but often so we can experiment without damaging priceless objects. My current favourites are the prints of some of the Star Carr antler headdresses – fantastic mesolithic artefacts from a site in North Yorkshire (http://www.starcarr.com/headdresses.html). The prints have let students really explore how they may have been worn, and maybe understand a bit of what that experience was like.
