To aid in his machining projects, Adam recently picked up a full set of micrometer screw gauges–precision calibrated tools for measuring his machined parts and components. Today’s One Day Build is a deep dive into how measurement affects machining processes and the ways to achieve ultra-precise measurement, and the customization of a beautiful wooden case to organize and hold all of these important gauges.

We get an early look at Bandai’s Ronin Mandalorian figure from their popular Star Wars Movie Realization series, and Norm builds a 1/12th scale dojo diorama in the aesthetic of this feudal Japanese spin on Star Wars. Here’s how this display was designed and laser cut with our glowforge, and dressed with foliage materials we’ve used in past Model Behavior projects!
This week, we gush over the first images and audio to come from NASA’s Perserverance rover after its successful landing on Mars! Jeremy is also beaming with pride over his first video game development credit in Blizzard’s new Arcade Collection. With the highs also come the lows as we say goodbye to Cinefex, Daft Punk, and the computer store Fry’s electronics. Plus some news on the PSVR front!
Spot has received a massive upgrade in the form of its new robot arm! Boston Dynamics upgrades our Spot with its new arm and Adam puts its gripper to the test to see how well it can grab objects littered around the Tested studio and even open doors! We show how manual operation of the arm works, the dexterity of its movement, and get a sense of its potential as a platform for developers to create dynamic and automated tasks.

This week’s model kit build actually begins as a disassembly, as Norm takes apart a Bandai 1/6 scale Stormtrooper figure to rebuild it as an exploded-view model, revealing the internal structure and kit design alongside its armored shell. It’s like an exploded-view diagram in physical form, and a simple modification anyone can do with wire, superglue, and their favorite snap-fit model kit!

Adam’s latest build taps into his love for Studio Ghibli films, a bit of modelmaking, and in-camera practical effects as he constructs a stunning display inspired by one of his favorite Miyazaki films. It’s a slow burn of a build as Adam gradually reveals his sketched out plans; the result is a mesmerizing combination of light and movement that is beautiful to behold!

We get excited for the Perserverance rover Mars landing happening later today in this week’s episode. Jeremy finally watches In and Of Itself, we get hyped for The Last of Us casting, and try to deciper the new Chevy Bolt announcements. Plus, Kishore gets a Pelaton and we wrack our brains around reverse engineering the source code to GTA III.
Adam shares another essential tool that was one of the first specialized tools he fell in love with when he was working in graphic design: the transparent grid triangle. Anyone who does any kind of making with layouts should have a few of these rulers of different sizes in your toolset! C-Thru (now Westcott) 12″ Grid Triangle: https://amzn.to/3qoy2iA

Adam recently completed a build of the royal St. Edwards crown inspired by the one worn on stage for Hamilton, and he pairs that prop with a full King George costume! It’s Adam’s first time trying on the full getup–crown, cape, and all–and we take the costume for a photo shoot at the beautiful Sydney Goldstein theater in San Francisco to see what it looks like on stage!
