Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Micrometer Gauge Box Set!

To aid in his machining projects, Adam recently picked up a full set of micrometer screw gauges–precision calibrated tools for measuring his machined parts and components. Today’s One Day Build is a deep dive into how measurement affects machining processes and the ways to achieve ultra-precise measurement, and the customization of a beautiful wooden case to organize and hold all of these important gauges.

Star Wars Ronin Mandalorian Figure Diorama Build!

We get an early look at Bandai’s Ronin Mandalorian figure from their popular Star Wars Movie Realization series, and Norm builds a 1/12th scale dojo diorama in the aesthetic of this feudal Japanese spin on Star Wars. Here’s how this display was designed and laser cut with our glowforge, and dressed with foliage materials we’ve used in past Model Behavior projects!

Adam Savage Visits Animax’s Sculpting Room!

Adam visits Animax Design’s sculpting room, where he checks out a sculpture in-progress of a baby dinosaur. Sculptors Dave Dixon and Noah Flint walk Adam through the details of the figure and explain how Animax combines modern digital sculpting to alongside traditional hand sculpting to create its lively animated characters.

Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Velociraptor Costume, Part 2!

Adam’s velociraptor costume starts to take form as he builds out the external frame and structure of the main torso. It’s the week leading up to his trip cross-country to Animax Designs, and Adam scrambles to problem solve the balance of structure and weight for this costume. Thankfully, he has some experience building large character suits like his Totoro cosplay, and also finds a solution in a specialty textile called spacer mesh!

Adam Savage Learns to Vacuum Form Life-Size Dinosaur Skin!

Adam learns about the various materials and fabrication techniques that the builders at Animax Designs have developed to make the exterior shells of their dinosaur and creature animatronics. Experiments ranging from cast silicone to stretch fabrics allow for a balancing of weight and flexibility, and one technique calls for vacuum forming massive sheets of foam that is pressed with an impressive amount of detail. Let’s watch this machine in action!

Adam Savage Tests Boston Dynamics Spot’s New Robot Arm!

Spot has received a massive upgrade in the form of its new robot arm! Boston Dynamics upgrades our Spot with its new arm and Adam puts its gripper to the test to see how well it can grab objects littered around the Tested studio and even open doors! We show how manual operation of the arm works, the dexterity of its movement, and get a sense of its potential as a platform for developers to create dynamic and automated tasks.

Stormtrooper Exploded-View Model Kit Build!

This week’s model kit build actually begins as a disassembly, as Norm takes apart a Bandai 1/6 scale Stormtrooper figure to rebuild it as an exploded-view model, revealing the internal structure and kit design alongside its armored shell. It’s like an exploded-view diagram in physical form, and a simple modification anyone can do with wire, superglue, and their favorite snap-fit model kit!

Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Studio Ghibli Diorama!

Adam’s latest build taps into his love for Studio Ghibli films, a bit of modelmaking, and in-camera practical effects as he constructs a stunning display inspired by one of his favorite Miyazaki films. It’s a slow burn of a build as Adam gradually reveals his sketched out plans; the result is a mesmerizing combination of light and movement that is beautiful to behold!

Adam Savage Meets a Life-Size Animatronic T-Rex!

Adam steps into the massive workshop of Animax Designs, a character design and fabrication company that he’s been working with for his velociraptor costume. One of Animax’s specialties is the build of fully animatronic dinosaurs, and Adam gets up close with their massive Tyrannosaurus Rex mech that’s just about to be animated for the first time.
