Vintage Star Wars Collectibles Showcase!

A massive treasure trove of vintage Star Wars and pop culture toys and collectible ephemera are going on auction at the end of this month, and the folks at Prop Store bring a few of the rarities to our studio. We learn about prototype mockups, international figures, and even retail display pieces that would be the prize pieces for toy collectors.

PREMIUM – Model Behavior: Shiny Model Cars!

Bill and Norm build this delightful garage kit from Daniel Dawson, a 3D printed flying retro car model. For this project, we wnted to give this car a shiny candy coated finish, and experiment with two different applications of glossy clear coats: an Alclad lacquer Klear Kote and off the shelf floor gloss!

The Cut and Sew Clothing in Mezco’s 1:12 Figures

While New York Toy Fair is going on this week, we celebrate our love for pop culture toys and collectibles with a week of toy videos! First off, Norm puts a spotlight on Mezco’s 1:12 figures, which have impressed with their posability and cut and sew clothes, making them great for photographing and customizing.

PROJECTIONS: Spaces’ Location-Based VR Experience

We pay a visit to the new Spaces location-based VR experience recently installed in the Century Theaters San Jose branch, and chat with Spaces co-founder Brad Herman about the state of LBEs and how they relate to VR games you can play at home. Plus, we review Monopoly Deal and Angry Birds, both of which are interesting attempts to bring familiar gaming franchises to VR.

PREMIUM – Model Behavior: Painting Portraits

One daunting aspect of modelmaking is the painting of figure heads and portraits. To get over our fear of ruining a sculpture, we mold and cast a batch of heads to work on. Kayte and Norm each take a sculpt and paint them in quick succession, learning from each practice attempt and refining their workflow.
