YouTube Mobile Apps Get Picture-in-Picture Multi-Tasking

By Norman Chan

Best update in months to both the Android and iOS versions of the app.

If you updated Google's official YouTube app on Android or iOS yesterday, it's not just the app icon that's changed. The updated app is speedier and has redesigned UI elements to match Google's new "cards" design. You're also now able to search user playlists and automatically queue up videos from channel feeds. But the biggest change is the addition of a multi-tasking mode, which lets you shrink down a video during playback for picture-in-picture viewing while you continue to browse or search YouTube. The transition from PIP to full-screen is fluid and seamless, activated with either a swipe down or the touch of a button. You can't play two videos at once, though--clicking through to another video page will take over playback. The update is out for Android and iOS now.
